Orange Bush-Brown Butterfly (Mycalesis terminus)

I just assume this is a moth. It's smaller than a regular butterfly. I have been trying to catch one of these with it's wings open. They are a really pretty orange but the pattern on the outside is gorgeous too. She's sitting on a Dianella leaf.

Thanks so much to those that helped identify this as a butterfly.
Fantastic soft dof and beautiul detailed catch of the moth and the leaf it's sititng on, very very prettty

I would guess it's a moth too, and yes, a very pretty one! Great capture! I never heard of the leaf. It goes so well in this photo..

Such a pretty butterfly/moth Sheralee - I can only capture cabbage moths! tee hee - nice to see a photo where you didn't have to lie on your tummy. :-)

I follow the simple rule that Moths sit with their wings out flat and a B'fly sits with its wings up... so this is a butterfly. Not a Blue Argus is it?

Actually it looks like a butterfly to me. Could be a Dusky Bushbrown or related to that one. As Jason says, moths usually rest with their wings open. Haven't had time to look properly but it's close to the DB. Nice capture, anyway.

Beautiful capture! It (I thought butterfly and I also asked my hubby and he thinks moth - so we're not much help!) is so pretty! The pattern on its wings reminds me of a classic hand held fan. After a quick google search I think @girlie is correct :)

Given what you've said about its colour, I think it's likely to be the Orange Bushbrown. See http://www.nams.ca/MagiBlog/2010/11/29/ for a photo of one.

@photoheart @alia_801 @psychographer @bremi @weekendhacker @specky @difeeney @orangecrush @stinkercat @zferrie @murnane Thanks so much for looking and commenting. It turns out this is a butterfly, she would be so insulted that I called her a moth ;-)

Marg all those tummy shots are counted as exercise in my book :)

Very pretty. I took a shot of one of these in a resort I was staying at a few wks ago. I thought it was a moth as it was hanging around a light in the corridor.
