Cassowary by bella_ss

Cassowary

A native of Australia, it's quite large about the size of an emu. We were really lucky to see this one and had just been commenting how we didn't think they really existed. Apparently they can be quite vicious if they are frightened so I quickly retreated to my car when he got too close. He probably just thought I was going to feed him.
wow... never seen a bird a like this... I am fascinating about seeing new animals... thanks for sharing.

Oh yes, they can be quite scary; I always run very fast the other way when I come across them in the wild. This is a great shot of this one, Sheralee.

Looks like an ostrich. What a cool bird to see just hangin' around.

@jenrobcarr It was just wandering along the side of the road, apparently people have had to feed them after the cyclone so this fellow may have thought I had some food for him.

@girlie I didn't know at the time that they were dangerous but when he/she kept coming towards me, I quickly got back in the car.

I've seen programmes about these. Apparently they have really sharp claws on their feet and they can kick out and even kill you with those powerful feet if you're not careful. Amazing capture xx

@psychographer @trude That's right! I don't think I will be really keen to get up close again with one. I was shooting at 50mm so I was quite close.

I once met a male and his chicks at Wallaman Falls... yup, scary alright. Best to wear your camera bag on your chest for protection.

@bobfoto I was totally unaware of them being vicious although a passerby called out to me to be careful! So I was!
