Day 5 of my childhood theme.
If I could have a pound (or euro or Dollar) for every time I've heard one of my children say 'I'm Bored" I would be a lot better off than I am. I ask them, How on earth can you be bored with numerous DVDs, Computers, X box 360, Wii, Nintendos, cable TV, Ipods etc etc at your disposal? They just shrug their shoulder, which I guess is fair enough, I think I might be bored too.
I cast my mind back to those long school holidays, when the weather was less than clement (which it often was in Yorkshire) and I had nothing to do. So what did I do. I played patience with a pack of cards and then when I'd played enough, I'd build a house of cards...
Oh my goodness, I was only saying the same thing to my mum a few days ago! Kids today have no idea how we used to entertain ourselves years ago! They have all these gadgets and still get bored! We were a playing cards/monopoly/yahtzee family when I was younger and our evenings were the best!! The night before last we taught my 7yr old how to play Rummy and he LOVED it!!! Anyway, I love this B&W pic - something my bro and I used to do too!
This is wonderful. The lighting is so good. Your photos are so creative. I really enjoy viewing them. That is also a very impressive house of cards you built:)
Sorry for the group reply but I felt that you all deserve to hear this. Thank you so much for your lovely comments, but now the confessions. I did make card houses all the time when I was a child, massive ones, however card production technology has changed since I was a kid and these days all cards are plastic coated. This makes it nigh on impossible to stop the cards from sliding about, and hence the tower collapses. I did try several times, and I so wanted to make this shot that in the end I had to resort to a little trickery. OK, I own up, I had to sellotape some of the cards together. So, a huge heartfelt apology if any of you have sent your kids off to make one of these, and they haven't been able and you've had to deal with tears and tantrums. The card house in my picture did have the joker as the top card, and that was my little play on words, but it was cropped off, I would have added it to the top of the spare pile of cards, but unfortunatly it was sellotaped in place. Some would say 'divine retibution' . I feel cleansed now. @jlhopgood@kimmiesue@jenirainbow@tinatmmc@swguevin@tinatmmc@beckys@chiichan@lazydaisy0413@michelleyoung@timandelke@pammerritt@jsw0109@myhrhelper@bobbyj@peterdegraaff@nyusha@denisedaly
great shot, lovely b&w - and yes, I used to do this a child, but as you've confessed they were a sort of waxy fabric-y card, and it was much easier to do.
Oh wow!! Tape or not, this is impressive! The lighting and the shadows are beautiful. When I was bored I used to take my jar of change, dump it out, plop myself down on the opposite side of the room and pitch the coins into the jar. Kept me occupied for hours. :) We all love playing cards around here.
Nice shot. and re your commentary, I would be bored too if I had to spend hours with numerous DVDs, Computers, X box 360, Wii, Nintendos, cable TV, Ipods etc etc and no time for anything requiring patience, creativity, or exploring. I really feel very sorry for today's young who miss out on so much in a world of pre-packaged push-button entertainment ... but perhaps that's just my age!
Thanks Jerry, After about half an hour I searched the house for non plastic coated cards, didn't find any. After another half hour trying different packs, I then got the sellotape out! Well done on finishing your project, you had some amazing images. @orangecrush
