old me by blightygal

old me

When I saw this weeks theme I thought of my old hair, and thought I'd upload it for a laugh - and no, of course I wont enter it, but it gives me a day off from 365!

This was taken 20 years ago, in a bathroom at my friends univeristy flat in Leeds. We'd just got ready to go out clubbing.
I was the only one of my girlfriends who went this wacky with their clothes (this hair would go up in a mohican if so desired) but we all liked the same music, the same scene.
Back in those days all I did was get drunk, go to art school (yay for stereotyping!) and go to music gigs. Ahhh.... life was pretty darn fine.

I also learned a few lessons dressed like that. I would have people thump me if I went to a more.. how do we put it... more casual pub or club, I had people move away from me in packed trains and old ladies would tutt loudly as they walked past me with their blue rinses. I even had a bunch of Japanense tourists photograph me back on the beach in my old hometown of Brighton - that was funny and they enjoyed laughing at me!!
I learned to never judge a book by its cover and to see the best in people (until proven otherwise). Its something I still carry with me today. Back then I was as sweet as can be, always trying to help everyone so it used to amuse me that I was judged on looks alone.

Ahhh, it sure was fun and I wouldnt change a single thing of my teenage years.
A bit of the Alison Moyet's going on there Freida...

Funny, most people say siouxsie sioux!
August 24th, 2010
Hmmm yeah, her too.... although I could also say Zelda, my former boss :-)
August 24th, 2010
Aha that looks AND sounds like fun ;)

Cool pic and life lessons learned!

Did you go to the Phono? I think it was still open back then.
August 24th, 2010
The one thing about hair...It will always growback!
August 24th, 2010
that hair is certainly red! :)
August 24th, 2010
How cute are you! The makeup says The Cure but the hair feels like a cross between Siouxsie Sioux, Kate Bush and Tori Amos. I wish I had been braver in my teens. =)
August 24th, 2010
Hahah, this is on the popular page now!
August 24th, 2010
Way cool!
August 24th, 2010
Freida, love the photo and story. You would very hip today in Seattle. Dalia is right you have made the popular page...Very good.
August 24th, 2010
nice shot!
August 24th, 2010
This soooooooo reminds me of the early 80's... I'm lovin' it! lol :)
August 24th, 2010
I thought Tori Amos immediately but with an Evanescence or Goldenhorse soundtrack :) Like the pose and the barely there reflection in the wall. I had a long jet black mohawk for my first year as a uni student. It amuses and annoys me that most schools back in NZ are so strict about hair styles, to the point of suspending or getting a barber in to cut on school grounds, when as you say it is just a form of expression and so easily reversed too.

OH the good old me days! GREAT look you had going there! Brought me back AND made me want to sing "What If God Were One Of Us"...lol...
August 24th, 2010
oh goodness! it is fun to look back at the old "us"....awesome of you to show this to us!!!
August 24th, 2010
A blast from the past, reminds me of my youth. I grew up in High Wycombe and had very similar experiences with the casuals. I seem to remember a lot of snakebite and black being drunk in the graveyard!
August 24th, 2010
I love it, Freida!! Sometimes it's nice to revisit the past and have a laugh ;-)) Red hot old you! ;-)
August 24th, 2010
you ROCKD it!!! very fierce! i like it!
August 24th, 2010
WoW Frieda! You look amazing!!! Def Alison Moyet with a touch of Siouxsie.....I'm afraid I' m ahead of you in years and me in my teens would be something rather different......not quite a skinhead girl but quite close! Yikes!! Unfortunately no pics available! LOL Then of course there was my hippy era...OMG!!!
August 24th, 2010
very cool hair!
August 24th, 2010
You got to see the Specials! Wow lucky you!
August 24th, 2010
That's a very cool picture of you. I was not that brave in trying new things with my hair or clothes but I had a good friend who I helped to create the most crazy colourful hair and outfits that you can imagine. That was really fun.

The Phono was downstairs, under the Merrion Centre, Can't remember how Manu floors. My memory isn't what it used to be! Been in Leeds since 1985. Came here for Uni and kind of hung around after!
August 24th, 2010
Great shot. A red headed version of Siouxsie Sioux!
August 24th, 2010
How fun! I loved reading your story, especially the part about the blue rinses, lol! :D
August 24th, 2010
Hello Freida! Thanks for the blast from your past. :)
August 24th, 2010
I'd say I love the processing of this image, but given the history this is probably SOOC. Kinda funny that we have actions and such to gain this type of shot with today's cameras :)

Ira
Aaaaaah...LOVE!

:)

And believe me, I know what you are talking about.
August 24th, 2010
Too often I've been witness to exactly what you're talking about. It's been a good life lesson to see "looks" as artistic expression, and to look for the humanity within. That was good to share your personal experience with us, but I'm betting most in this group would have loved your company & personality straight through from the start!
August 24th, 2010
hey Freida! i was wondering what exactly you meant by Photography school being a "laugh" is this a good thing? did you find it worth your while and your money? lol sorry, i am just curious! And I know i don't have the greats kills right now but i have a passion and people keep asking me to take their photos and I am scared that i won't deliver the goods you know? so I am hoping that school will obviously give me the skills and the confidence but also help me with the business side it. I guess any advice you have would be awesome!
August 24th, 2010
thank you for getting back to me. And you didn't worry me i was just curious what you meant! =)

See unfortunetly for me I am married to a soldier who belongs to the government and we have to be where they tell us to be. And right now that is in upstate New York State where there isn't much. So I will be attending Art Institute Online. I will be going for 4 yrs and get my BA in Science, (i know it is strange that it is science..) But it is completely focused on photography. All aspects, which I thought was good. give me a well rounded education and allow me to make a informed career choice. But I think that what I will probably do Is start my own business where ever I am. (hoping our next move will take us to a larger city) we will be moving about the time i finish collage. anyway. I know that you are into press photography and that is probably NOT the direction I am going but your advise is so welcomed and if you find any extra time i was wondering if you could take a look at my course listings and let me know what you think. it is hard to find constructive answers about school. my research online has either told me that people HATE it or LOVE it. and the admissions person i talk to will obviously push for their school. So i guess any biased insight would be awesome. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
August 24th, 2010
I meant Bachelor in Science not BA....gah! sorry for commenting so many times!!!! =/
August 24th, 2010
Yay! you have no idea how much more at ease i feel! =) and I decided that i may just have to get and AA in business if I plan to start my own...or maybe I would need to and it will all come naturally! lol we will see =) thanks again for taking time out of your day to help me and to look at that link!!!!!

August 24th, 2010

August 25th, 2010

August 25th, 2010
lol, some of those reactions are just... wow! I am loving that hair colour - it is kickass.

I used to colour mine randomly - red, blue, purple (but just streaks - the rest was kept black) but it took waaay too much effort so I stopped.
August 25th, 2010
Ginger!!!!!!!!!!!
August 25th, 2010
just wonderful
August 26th, 2010
I love this!!!!! I had a mohawk and very similar experiences in my 20's (20 something years ago!) I wouldn't change a thing either--it's taught me tolerance above all else. You look awesome--very Siouxie Sioux.
