Today I'm pleased to announce something we've been secretly developing for a while now.
We call them, Notifications.

What are they?
Notifications will appear in the menu at the top of your screen, they show you recent activity from your project, the kind of things you currently receive emails about, along with a few new niceties.

What do I have to do?
Nothing, your Notifications will start working from today.

Comment Replies!
Part of the new system includes the option to reply to comments, to reply to a comment you can use the @ symbol (similar to twitter) to mention a user. To make this a bit easier I have added a new "Reply" button on each comment for a photo and a discussion post.

As we launch today there are only a few different types of notifications that appear, I'd really love to hear your feedback on this, and of course we can add extra notifications as we move forward. Would love to hear your views and suggestions in the comments below.

Thanks guys!

I just got my first notification!!! NICE ROSS!!! Thank you so much for this! I know I have certainly developed a nice family feeling with a number of users here and it will be great to be able to maintain our conversations a little easier. My only suggestion would be to add an option to make a reply "private" in case you would like to respond with something personal and not have it show in the comments thread for a photo. I know this sounds a lot like private messaging and maybe that is the answer but I know I have seen this request around here a number of times. I just think of people like Louise who are super active on here and I know it might be nice to keep conversations seperate from comments. I know - why not just exchange email addresses? But where are you supposed to do that? In your comments? I am sure you understand my point. =) Keep up the great work!!!

This sounds really cool! But even cooler is that you've found another user with my name! :-D

Oh yeah, if you use the @ symbol to reply to someone on your wall, do they get a notification to say you've replied to them then? Like if I type "@Ross - thanks!" would you know I'd written that?

I love that you can reply now, so instead of commenting on someone's photo and confusing everyone else, it's just a reply!! Keep up the great work!! :)

Thank you! Really love the new feature. Being able to send a reply directly to the person who made the comment instead of locating their most recent post and putting it there or commenting on my photo and hope they come back to it - it's so helpful.

This is a really great feature!!! Nice one Ross!!! Have a question if you don't mind? How would I search for friends who joined 365? I tried to search my friend's name but it just doesn't show. Kinda hard to look at the Latest pictures one by one to see what he uploaded for me to be able to follow him. Again, Thanks!!!

Thank you Ross. this is great instead of having to locate a photo that the comment was on. I am not great with computers and have my sons heart broken from calling him to help me, but this site is so user friendly i love it and it has a huge impact on my photography and my life, great people on it and fantastic talent. thanks again x

I have a question. When you use the @ sign (and the user name of course) for example @shelina to make sure someone gets a notification, does it have to be at the beginning of the message or can it be anywhere? I have seen the code in the middle of a message and not gotten a notification.
posted September 25th, 2010
I was just informed by Steve that my putting a semi-colon directly after the name will not send out email notices. Needs a space after it and then you can type your message. Ok, I've learned something new today. Thanks.

So let's say I read a funny comment from a fellow 365-er under the photo of someone we both follow, and I want to give him a compliment on his wit. I hit the reply button and say, "LOL" or "I agree" or some such. Does the first poster get a notification? And how will he know where I posted my compliment?
posted September 30th, 2010
Thanks Ross for the great feature.

If you are looking for enhancement suggestions (!) I'd love to be able to select which notifications I get (e.g I would like reply notifications, but not comment notifications as an example). Along with many others I'd love a notification if my picture is on the popular page ... it's fun to know and also helps me undertstand where the comment are coming from.

Thank you, Ros. This is great. I found the button yesterday even before I read your description. I am thrilled

Sounds good to me. Are you also secretly working on an Instant Message box. Sometimes we would like to have an "For Your Eyes Only" comment.

I just read about this but do not see it on my home or project page.
