Weekly Theme - Remembrance

by Ross S. on Apr 25th 2011

Jason's Frog and Fly came out top from the Voting for the "In The Garden" theme, well done Jason.

I spoke to Jason and he has chosen "Remembrance" as our theme for this week...

Anzac Day is important to me and to Australians. With Anzac Day on Monday, this weeks theme will give many people an opportunity to reflect on the tragedies of the past and those that continue today.

If you would like to enter please tag your photos with theme-remembrance

-------------------------
Entry to this theme starts on Monday 25th April and will accept entries until Sunday night (23:59 GMT 1st May). 5 finalists will be chosen next week and we'll start voting on Wednesday.

Entries must have been taken and uploaded this week only! Entries outside of the date range will not be accepted in to the final 5.

Such a bummer.... I took this a week early. This will be the 10 year anniversary of the WTC attack, one of this countrys greatest tragedies.

This doesn't qualify since its old, but this is the empty spot where one of the World Trade Center towers once stood in NYC, 9 years after the terrorist attacks of 09/11.

April 25th, 2011
Congratulations, Jason, and great choice of theme.

Doesn't qualify for the remembrance theme as it's not taken during the correct dates, but I just wanted to share this photo with you. I won't go into the details here but I've commented on the actual pic itself.

April 25th, 2011
Ohh I only just saw this - had started a post for people to share - so i can put my photo here :-)

For those who don't know the red poppy has become a symbol of rememberence for ANZAC - they sell them on the street to raise funds and this is my one :-)

Congrats Jason!!!!!

I didn't manage to get an ANZAC photo because I was sick but I might still do one and just have the wrong date lol

Here is the caption for this photo:
Proof! I call this shot "Proof" b/c some have, in the past, referred to our loss as a "miscarriage" but here is PROOF that she LIVED! Sadly it's also proof that she died. Forever loved and missed is our first born daughter, Elizabeth. Can't wait for our Heavenly reunion

My entry for Theme-Rembrance: Birthday/Memorial Angel 2011

My mother suffered from Sickle Cell Disease, and when I was born, she was told that she would not live past the age of 35. Well, to my great joy, she lived until she was 68 (April 20, 2009) even though she was in pain every day of her life.

Since I bought this angel in remembrance of my mother, I wanted to recognize all of the people who have died from Sickle Cell Disease and to thank my mother for giving birth to me 51 years ago: " I love you, Mom. Thank you for giving me life and for loving me for 50 years and 9 months."

THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS NOT BEING ENTERED INTO THE THEME-REMEMBRANCE CONTEST. It is a photograph I would like to offer to my Aussie and New Zealand friends for ANZAC Day:

April 26th, 2011
Congrats Jason!! I'm going to look up Anzac, I know nothing about it unfortunately. @scrivna are we able to take this theme of remembrance how we want if we don't live in Australia? Like for instance, 9-11 for those of us in the US or maybe other dates we choose to remember... just wanted to clarify if it had to be an Anzac Day photo.
April 26th, 2011
@amyhughes I was wondering the same thing... can remembrance apply to anything we like? (for those non-australians?(; )

Darn..Guess this one is disqualified because it was taken on the 23rd.
This beautiful columbine was developed and named "Remembrance" to honor the victims of the tragedy at Columbine high school in Colorado back in April of 1999.

On ANZAC day, I don't just remember those who fought for our freedom ... but I remember the wives, children and mothers left behind.
April 26th, 2011
@bobfoto You are a star JD!!
April 26th, 2011
@amyhughes @kelseyyx23
I've seen a number of amazing shots on here already for 9/11 or even personal rememberence... I personally think it's your own interpretation of the word "Rememberance" (as it's not specifically called "ANZAC") - so like all other themes, go with what you think it to be...
April 26th, 2011
@amyhughes also my image (1st on this thread, with the sprig of Rosemary) has an explanation of ANZAC Day, if you are interested...

"Staunch the Pain"

Proud to present you my first entry for a Weekly Theme,
I really hope some of you like it, and if so, it would be so awesome supporting it,
as this is one of my first shots, which means it's the sixth picture of mine yet. :)

As I already said in the personal text of this picture on my "blog", how I like to call it, the quality of the picture is quite poor, because I've just a digicam to use, but I think eventhough it can put itself into an appearence.

@bfmassey Hugs to you. What a poignant anecdote. Thanks for sharing it with us. @kaustin Is that four generations of hands? Lovely.

It is good to remember all those who have gone before.

lovely photos everyone and thank you for your kind words. I deliberately chose Remembrance as it can mean more then just Anzac and it seems by the beautiful shots already in this thread that yeah, people are thinking along the same lines.

Peace.

@aa Alison, if you pull up onto your screen the photo that you would liek to share, then down on the right hand side panel will be a url link, copy that link and paste it onto here. You wont 'see' the photo appear in here until the comment box has been posted.

I'm moving around this week, so my shots are being posted whenever I can... but here's my Anzac Day shot itself. After the huge 4,000 people plus service at the Villers-Bretonneaux Cemetery, the town itself performs a smaller, intimate service at this memorial.

Ok I've actually re-done the processing of the one I did yesterday & since I don't want to load/submit two of the same image I'll remove the theme tag from the previous one (but leave it in this thread so that you can see the differences between teh two)...

This one has a more realistic feel to it (although still not perfect in my eyes), but still has the dramatic feel to it I was after...

Dead 18-Month-Old Baby's 4th Birthday Spontaneous Memorialization

An 18-month-old baby died in a house fire set by his mother's boyfriend. The mother, her daughter, and her niece also died in the fire. The burned house, which was in the lot behind the tree, was torn down within a month of the fire. The arsonist was arrested and charged with the deaths of 4 people.

All four of my grandparents are buried at the same cemetery. Spent some time there this week because of the weekly theme of remembrance. I've never taken a camera to the cemetery before... I saw the same cemetery - even though I've been there dozens of times over the years - but in a different way.

I'm not entering this in the theme as I took it in February but I thought it fitted well with the other photos of rememberance.

This is a statue in Coventrys Cathedral Ruins entitled Reconcilliation. It was created by Josefina de Vasconcellos. In 1995 (50 years after the end of the second World War) it was given to Coventry by Richard Branson, an identical statue was placed in the Peace Garden, Hiroshima, Japan on behalf of the people of Coventry.

The sculptures were placed to remind us that in the face of destructive forces human dignity and love will triumph over disaster and bring nations together in respect and peace.
