Historically, a rather large river used to exist here (phoenix, az) but the powers that be damned it upriver so now it's a glorified 'wash'. After a big rain storm, we get to enjoy a river (sometimes, rarely), but mostly trees have settled in and stretch their roots to drink from the deep water table.
