Peel building

photo 202
The Peel Building is the oldest structure at Salford University, it was built at the end of the 19th century, circa 1896 (and imho it is stunningly beautiful, though I am biased coz it's where I studied when I finally realised, aged 31, that I might actually be intelligent enough to go to uni...others though still wonder :) )
The facades of the building are constructed from a combination of red Accrington brick and terracotta detailing.
Accrington brick was used extensively throughout the North West of England to build virtually everything from homes to factories, schools and universities, it was also used to construct the foundations of both Blackpool Tower and the Empire State Building. I would bet that most, if not all, of the red brick buildings you can see in the Beetham tower shot from yesterday, are built from Accy brick.

Now that's a proper building! What a fantastic shape & colour.
I didn't know about Accrington brick being used in the Empire State building. Very educational. :)

I love the windows - all different shapes and sizes, the port holes are the best. The colour is magnificent :)
