Heapstead in Winter by bmnorthernlight

Heapstead in Winter

Spent an enjoyable afternoon strolling around Woodhorn Colliery Museum, breathing in frosty air and enjoying clear skies and sunshine. In my excitement and anticipation of a night out and G & Ts had forgotten my camera bag in the office Friday evening...wouldn't otherwise find myself next door to work on a weekend and at a time when the museum is open, so really, it was a bonus :-)

Ha like this - as a nature takes over kind of shot.

@fueast it's such a beautiful place now surrounded by nature reserve and lake. Hard to imagine what it must have been like at the height of coal production. But I just love those old industrial buildings and remnants too!

Fab composition and love the tones.

i really like this! i like that the limbs in the corners are in focus, yet you can see the wheel in the background. plus the colors are so pretty!

love the composition - I take it you have been to beamish museum
January 15th, 2012
@mortisa Thanks Jane! No, it's Woodhorn Colliery in Ashington. Where the pitmen painters are from. It's now a fantastic museum and the two old heapsteads and a few other buildings remain.

@bmnorthernlight sorry i know this is woodhorn but have you been to beamish?
January 15th, 2012
@mortisa Yes, been a few years since the last time but it's amazing!!! Heard it's even more expensive now though to get in :-(

childhood memories of seeing seeing these all around where I grew up, lovely photograph

@bmnorthernlight beamish is my favourite museum, might have to check out woodhorn next time i am there - it looks interesting
January 15th, 2012
@mortisa It's really worth it! And the only thing you have to pay is £3 for parking (and whatever you might have in the lovely cafe ;-))

It has an exhibition where you walk through mining history from 1918 to just after the miner's strikes. Lots of other bits too and a room full of paintings from the Ashington Group.

@johnnyfrs Thank you :-) Couldn't resist a tiny little bit of cross processing...I think I may have an addiction to it!
January 15th, 2012
@paulaag Thank you Paula! I played around with both options of foreground or background in focus but loved the branches in focus best

Great shot ... the PoV and focusing makes it interesting.
Did you touch the colours at all?
January 15th, 2012
This out of focus shot is great, it helps to give it a feeling of abandonment
January 15th, 2012
Beautiful framing and focus!

January 15th, 2012

@sixthblade Thank you Miguel! I did a bit of cross processing which gave the sky more of a yellow hue, but really brought out the shadows on the wheel and gave it a bit more depth. the colour of the wheel/heapstead is pretty much as is

Nice focus on the foreground. Makes the background look like something in the past time.
January 16th, 2012
Great capture; really feels like the mine is no more due to your focus.
