Blupela Bikpela Wailpusi Bataplai by bobfoto

Blupela Bikpela Wailpusi Bataplai

Papua New Guinea is just south of the Equator and being a Tropical collection of Islands, it has some amazing wildlife, bugs and birds. When they are not being consumed. A protein poor nation, everything is fair game, so while it is an amazing ecosystem, it does
take a bit of effort to find some cool critters.

This butterfly was seen resting on Loloata Island in Bootless Bay, it is impressive to see butterflies flying over large expanses of water and it amazes me just how far this guys will fly. I have seen butterflies resting on floating coconuts some kilometres away from the shore.

PNG has the world's largest Butterfly, the massive Queen Alexandra Butterfly. Once upon a time, I was chatting with the son of Queen Alexandra and we were talking about a Birdwing Butterfly that flew past. The Duke pulled out his camera and took off to get a photo, as we discussed the majestic butterflies of the PNG Tropics and in particular about how the first Queen Alexandra Butterfly was captured after being shot down with a shotgun! The Duke looked at me and said "I don't know if mother would have approved." That particular specimen is now in the Natural History Museum in London.

Photo taken 2 January 2009. Title reads "Blue Tiger Butterfly"

I had a great comment all worked up for this but, unfortunately, the photo made my head esplode from the awesome. I think it had something to do with your DoF and the focus on its head. I'll get back to ya. :)

@bobfoto I was so disappointed to learn that the compilation of words that I heard were pidgin for helicopter and piano are actually myths, so disillusioned now
January 3rd, 2012
@lbmcshutter - what Mixmasta bilong jisas krais is a myth!!!!???

I saw it on a painting by one of the PNG local artists! I bet Kuage had something to do with that!
January 3rd, 2012
@voodoochild @veekay - Thank you ladies, hope you enjoy the fun and journey!
January 3rd, 2012
@lbmcshutter - there certainly seems to be a division between old school tok pisin of the New Guinean Highland and North Coast people and the younger Papuan and Islander population who had to learn tok pisin at a later date to replace their Motuan languages.
