Anzac Day by bobfoto

Anzac Day

Anzac Day in Port Moresby means Dawn Service at Bomana War Cemetery, and it is an inspiring location. Before the sun rises, spotlights shine on the first few rows of headstones and light up the large Rain Trees where the service is held. As the Bugler plays the Last Post and the sun rises over the Owen Stanley Ranges to the east, the light then shows the 3,800 odd headstones that honours the final resting place of those soldiers who died in the Kokoda campaign, in Milne Bay, in Buna, in Gona and Sanananda. The graves of those who died in Bougainville and the Solomons are also interred here.

On April 25th, Australians and New Zealanders throughout the world gather before dawn to honour those who have served in the defence force in all conflicts, the date was chosen as the anniversary of the day Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula and fought the Turkish enemy. It was not Australia's first conflict of World War One but the one that captured the hearts of Australians back home on the other side of the globe.

Lest We Forget.
What a beautiful capture! Lest we forget.

Australia fed 331,781 young men into the World War I mincer of France, Belgium, Gallipoli and the Middle East. Almost 60,000 never came home. Of those who did, 213,000 returned wounded, either in body or mind. Another 85,000 Australians enlisted but did not serve overseas. In a nation of just 4 million, 416,809 of its men - all volunteers - were in uniform at some time during the years 1914-18.

Awestruck.....

Damn. That is a beautiful sight.... It's good to honor and pay tribute to those who've served. It looks like a lovely ceremony.

@ozziehoffy @teenerweener @hellcat - Here's another fact for Anzac Day, it was in Papua New Guinea where the first Australian soldier was killed in conflict in the First World War, fighting against the Germans.

April 25th, 2012
Lovely fitting tribute photo for today. I went to the Dawn Service here, and as always was very moving. Once the marhers had arrived, they played the NewZealand National Anthem, and finished the Service with the Australian National Anthem. I always cry when the bugler plays the Last Post. I think there will be a few ANZAC tribute photos today.

April 25th, 2012
NZers gather before dawn too!!! We were at our service too and particularly for me as an old family friend served in WW2 and received an MC for bravery although no one knew about that until he died last year. Anzac day would've been his 92nd birthday. This is a beautiful shot
April 25th, 2012
This is awesome Jason.
April 25th, 2012
great shot - makes me remember when I worked overseas, we would visit the war cemeteries and visit and remember the Australians and New Zealanders who were interred so far from home. We never had numbers like this.

@houdiniem @johnnyfrs - Thank you Emily and thank you John.

@alia_801 - thank you.

@pennymilner - Ooops, thank you Penny, I have amended my prose, and you would be proud to know that the New Zealand High Commission play an active role in the Dawn Service in PNG at Bomana, the NZ flag is flown, their Anthem is sung and the NZ High Commission and their Defence Attache play active roles in the order of service.

And there are 6 New Zealand Air Crew buried there.

@swilde - Thank you Sue.

@lbmcshutter - Around 1,500 attend the Bomana Dawn Service and possibly that and a few more attend the Gunfire Breakfast at the Australian High Commission! To which I never made it.

@kjarn @beckys @snowflakes86 @seanoneill - Thank you all.

@catsmeowb @nattybabe @hobgoblinwychwo - Thank you Camille, Nat and John, it was only today after I posted this shot, that I then realised how cool my old point and shoot was. I noted that the date the photograph was taken was pre-DSLR days for me and when I checked the exif data I noted it was hand held for 2 seconds. Makes me just a little bit prouder of that old pns. Thanks.
