Fopela man ol i stanup lo antap lo hol wara bilong Bisianumu

Sometimes on a walk in the mountains, one would hire a guide or two to help negotiate land issues and ensure one was remaining safe while just enjoying a walk in the jungle. Sometimes, well most times, there'd be a few hangers on hoping to score a bit of Guide Cash, but I remained steadfast to my initial contacts and verbal contract.

Here at the Bisianumu Rubber Plantation planted by Percy McDonald, a World War 1 veteran from Australia who lived a daring and exciting life in the early days of PNG colonisation, Percy or PJ became a legend in World War 2 when his plantation and hospitality was the last sense of decency before the Australian Troops embarked on the Kokoda Track towards the enemy troops. PJ was often known to hand out some tea and rum to the troops before they headed into the hell of Kokoda.

So the lad on the left in blue used to be my personal guide and I would tell him stories of the local war history and he would tell me stories of when they released a crocodile into the nearby swamp. One time the young fella walked along the trail in front and I could hear him humming a vaguely familiar tune. It was Men At Work and not the obvious "Land Down Under" tune but "Who Can It Be Now". I was impressed.

Photo taken 3 May 2009 at Bisianumu, CP. Title reads: Four men stand on top of the water hole.

Oh and for those who missed or got their comment in early yesterday, here was my shot for The Seven for the week: http://365project.org/theseven/365/2012-05-01
some great faces there, love the splashes of water around their ankles frozen in time. Sounds like some wonderful stories were exchanged and the men at work songs story makes me smile

Very cool shot, if only your personal guide wasn't partially blocked it would be a great album cover. Of course I don't know if any of these guys play instruments, still....... they know how to look good on a stage of flowing water. They could be "Men Who Work", the album title would be "At Rest". Another fine story.

Love having a local to be able to show and tell the stories and things that others don't get to see. Looks like a relaxing spot to stand around and shoot the breeze as well. :)

Who can it be now....classic men at work. I like the different expressions in this one, left to right - happy, unsure, watch your back, whats going on over there.....

@lbmcshutter - I was blown away when the young fella was singing the Men At Work song, it was such a cool rendition and he was singing as if no one could hear him by the end!

@maggiemae - Thank you Maggiemae :)

@houdiniem - Those lads in PNG know how to strike a stand.

@robv - I am sure they play the Uke. Everyone who walks or porters the Kokoda Track can play the Ukelele.

@tigerdreamer - Thanks KarenH :)

@geocacheking - It was a great waterhole for a swim and a laugh!

@scottkaway - I reckon you got the expressions spot on!

@tooki - Their diet always ensures that they are lean. Very fit country of people.

@carolmw @swguevin @hobgoblinwychwo @beckys @carolinedreams @daisy - Thank you all for your great replies! Love it!!!
