papai i lukim lo lusim het bilongim.

You know it is not all about feathers, face paint and beautiful Melanesian Grass-skirt wearing girls in Papua New Guinea. Down amongst the humus and composted leaf litter on the floor of the rainforest lives fungi like no other.

Here we see the exploded top of a really stinky fungi... one that relies on flies for procreation. The best way to attract a fly or 36 is to smell like decaying meat, and this bad boy was pretty stinky.

Gotta love a decaying meat smelling fungi when you are wandering around the jungle.

Photo taken 23 July 2008. Title reads: Mushroom he lost his head.
i like this picture !! :D

Thanks for sharing this...I love getting an education about PNG. (And, of course, I think the photo is beautiful!)

Even kinda looks like decaying meat when you know what it smells like. Gross lol. Nice shot though, Jason!
July 27th, 2012
@maggiemae - Oh Durian is beautiful eh?

@ozziehoffy - yeah that centre is quite a mix!
July 27th, 2012
Amazing how nature works, maybe I should change my aftershave! Nice shot and interesting too, although I wouldn't object to seeing more of the beautiful woman lol.
July 27th, 2012
@dalboy - still 5 months to go... plenty of time for beautiful women ;)
July 27th, 2012

Nice capture, horrific subject. Yuck !!
July 27th, 2012
@stuckinoz @tonydebont - It would be alright!
July 27th, 2012
It's so amazing sometimes stinky or poisonous critters can be so beautiful. Take the lion fish for example. Thanks for the education.
July 27th, 2012
How very odd and interesting
July 27th, 2012
Thats one wicked looking mushroom Jason. Add to that the smell....fierce. Great capture. Awesome color and the shape is definited perfectly with the background.
July 27th, 2012
Wow, that almost looks evil!
July 27th, 2012
oOoo it's like an alien plant ready to get ya!!!
July 27th, 2012
Nice :)
July 27th, 2012
How can something that looks so beautiful smell so bad?!
(Hang on, I said the same when the kids were babies....!!!)
That's a truly remarkable plant
July 27th, 2012
A brilliant splash of color against the dead leaves, too bad the smell is so rank. I've got some Stapeliad succulents that produce fleshy flowers that smell foul, for pollination rather than spore dispersal. Cool find and capture.

I have seen this type of fungi on my property. Have only seen the one and have not spotted any more since and that was about 2 years ago now. I have a photo of it somewhere & must have a look for it.

@losthorizon - Cheers Beau, it was pretty easy to find, just followed my nose.

@filsie65 - hee hee hee smelly kids.

@robv - In last years project I posted images of the Titan Arum, another stinky plant indeed.

@turning_40 - conditions must have been perfect that last time around, soil temps, moisture and light, all spot on.
July 28th, 2012
Wow, looks too pretty to smell bad.
July 28th, 2012
Great shot. It is strange to have such a lovely fungus stink like rotting meat. I have smelled plants that have this odor. NO Fun!
July 28th, 2012

Wow - that beats any fungi I've ever photographed, for sure. This must have been such an amazing journey for you.
July 29th, 2012
@lyno - It was just a bushwalk in a nearby National Park. On this occasion I was in training to walk the 96km Kokoda Track, so I was using the nearby Varirata National Park to walk Saturday and Sunday to get some kms in my legs. On this occasion, it was just me and a young man named Douglas.

August 30th, 2012
@hellcat - It looks a bit like a willy before it explodes...
August 30th, 2012
*blush* does that mean what I think it means?
August 30th, 2012
@hellcat - Sure does Hellcat.
August 30th, 2012
Exploding Willies! [alternates between laughing and crossing legs in empathy]
August 30th, 2012
@hellcat - like they say PNG - The Land of the Unexpected.
August 30th, 2012
@hellcat - Hey, what's small pink and wrinkly and hangs out ya undies?
August 30th, 2012
[cautiously] an old grandma? You said hangs out ya undies and not in ya undies, so... yeah.
August 30th, 2012
@hellcat - That's the one! Nanna on washing day.
August 30th, 2012
@hellcat - but if your undies have failed in the elastic department, it could be something else....
August 30th, 2012
*wipes brow* was ready to really get that wrong. :)

It's safe to say that the only undies that fail in the elastic department belong to men. Women go get new ones, gladly... or run commando.
