Thought I'd add another USNS Mercy shot. I like how instantaneous the Red Cross symbol is. But I also like rust. And I also like how there is a dude up there manning an automatic weapon.
Do I wish there was a blue sky that day? Not sure.
Photo taken 13 August 2008 in Port Moresby Harbour.
The Red Cross symbol is certainly a recognizable symbol. There is a lot going on in your photos, but it all goes together (name of ship, red cross, rust and a man with an automatic weapon (!). Although I like blue skies, I think this one looks good without the blue because the ship stands out from the white background.
I didn't even notice the little man until a second glimpse at the picture, well I'm sure he isn't little but compared to the red cross, he's teeny. The rust looks great too!
@lyno - Even their medical ships need protection. This was learnt during the Second World War when even Merchant Vessels and ships carrying POWs were sunk.
Great capture of an ironic tension. Irony or oxymoron? Regardless, the juxtaposition of symbolism is striking. But understandable in the risk they take. By the way, that may be the first time I've used the word juxtaposition in a sentence.
@daisy - I do think the overcast skies kinda help. Thanks Kathryn :)
Do you think they wanted the 'mercy' sign & red cross to be noticed?
@tonydebont @swilde - Yeah, it kinda says "we want to help, but don't push to the front of the queue"
