Manhaus bilong Tari by bobfoto

Manhaus bilong Tari

Street Photography, Southern Highlands Style, Papua New Guinea.

Walking past this house, I quickly aimed my trusty point and shoot at these two kids standing outside the Man House in Huli country.

The fire was on so probably some pitpit or kaukau or rice was on the boil and maybe deep inside there, the Hulimen were planning their next raid on the neighbouring clan? Maybe they were getting ready to head to the markets to buy some greens to put on the kaukau? Maybe they were relaxing with some New Guinea Gold?

Man House. Tari. Southern Highlands.

I should add that around 3 million Papua New Guineans live like this... subsistence hand to mouth, in structures just like this one... at least half the population.

Glad you are sharing your past with us in this way. It is truly interesting to see the shots and hear the stories. You make it almost like being there , Jason!

@grammyn - Thanks Katy, you always say nice things about my little journey through PNG, so happy you're enjoying the ride. :)

@archaeofrog - Doesn't take too long to discover that when you are surrounded by the ladies... ;)

@kandernob - Thanks Karen.

*always like it when the 365 throws up moments like this one, but I just need to say "Thank you Karen, Katie and Katy!"*

@michelleyoung - Sure is... got another manhouse shot coming up that is spectacular! At the end of the month though.

Love the simplicity of their lives.

@tthompsonca - It is deceiving sometimes. It is hard to believe when you see such wonderful people and then you hear about all the security issues... very conflicting.

Amazing to me how some live. Interesting shot.

@michaelelliott - we travelled with a young pregnant girl once who had never seen concrete, steel or motorcars. We flew with her to Moresby and she was terrified. When she saw the airport at Moresby, she was in tears. I couldn't imagine what she would think if she ever went to New York?
November 8th, 2012
@bobfoto -- omg I could only imagine what she would think!

What a fantabulous hut!

Wow! This is a beautiful shot--the children look so gentle and curious.

@worldbiking - Thanks Amaya... they did kinda photobomb the shot. They were out back and saw me stop, so they ran forward to see what was going on but they were too shy to come any closer.

It looks so low.... and I love how it's steaming/smoking! Yes I wonder what plotting was going on in there.
(We mentioned this before, are the PNGuineans shorter on average? Shorter than what... ehm.... you know what I mean.....!)
November 11th, 2012
@filsie65 - I'm 5ft 11 & 7/8ths and in a PNGean crowd I can clearly see over everyone's head. Not many are 6ft.

It's really neat that the building is woven together.
Perhaps the men were just getting pretty?
November 12th, 2012
@hellcat - I'm sure they were. And yes, a woven building is amazeballs!
