Remembrance Day by bobfoto

Remembrance Day

On the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns over Europe were silenced and an Armistice was signed bring the cessation of hostilities of The Great War.

While there are no soldiers who died during World War One here at the Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby, there are the graves of First World War dead buried in Papua New Guinea. The first Australian casualty of The Great War was on the island of New Britain at a German operated telegraph station near Rabaul and the cool Volcanos.

Being an Australian living in Port Moresby, a trip out to this war cemetery is quite an emotional journey, here lies 3,400+ Australian men and one woman who sacrificed their lives during World War Two. There are names here that are now Kokoda Legends, names from Milne Bay and the Beachheads that will be remembered evermore.

Lest We Forget.

November 10th, 2012
wowa, got the mega chills reading that and looking at the photo... i hold remembrance day close to my heart... my pop served in wwII... as a bus driver in PNG so was out of harms way, but admirable none the less.
Beautiful shot.

Powerful shot!

@sam_cr - Sam, along the Kokoda Track, the Aussies greatest loss came at Eora Creek where we lost (from memory) around 80 troops... To put that in perspective, back at Port Moresby, a convoy of trucks taking troops towards the Owen Stanley Range was ploughed into by a plane killing around the same number of men. Your Pop did well to return home.

@georgews @scatcat @pennymilner @steveh @kandernob @michelleyoung @webfoot @flyden @amandalomonaco @gerry @vstowe @httpgeffed - sorry for the bulk reply, but thank you all so much. I am travelling today, so limited to airport internet time. Thank you for such a positive response. It is good to know that we still remember the sacrifice that our fathers and grand fathers made what is now nearly 100 years ago.

November 10th, 2012
@bobfoto yes no doubt after Christmas these store keepers do not do things now by the season's Its just money they want to make .
November 10th, 2012
@gerry - guess the money they make helps put food on their table?
November 10th, 2012
I didn't know that! That's horrifying! So sad all those neat lines of graves!
November 10th, 2012
@maggiemae - there are 6 New Zealanders in this war cemetery too. :(
November 10th, 2012
There was quite a poignant war cemetery in Lae, when we lived there (assume it's still there). My mother came up to visit from Sydney, walked in, and found herself standing by the headstone of an old boyfriend, quite by chance. Very sad all round.

November 11th, 2012
@bobfoto chilling, i had no idea... Pop never talked about it much I guess he would have seen to much to talk. Driving troops to an from wounded... It's sad how uneducated we can be on certain austrlian history... Makes me want to visit, certainly puts life in perspective. x
November 11th, 2012
@sam_cr - If your pop travelled the road from Moresby to the hospitals and up to Sogeri, then there is still buildings and structures that your Pop would have stopped at or passed on his journey. That road has changed little.
November 11th, 2012
Striking image!
November 11th, 2012

Amy
What a stunning and powerful photo. I agree that the sky adds so much to the feeling of this photograph. I like that the center lines up to the monument in the background.
November 11th, 2012
@stuckinoz - Thanks Janelle :)

@amyvanross - I agree Amy, the clouds do help here!
November 11th, 2012
Gosh you did phenomenally well to line this up like this... not just a shooter of pretty faces I guess. :)
Excellent shot, and very fitting
November 11th, 2012
@filsie65 - I think the stonemasons who placed these 3,800 headstones did the real job of lining them up. ;)
November 11th, 2012
@bobfoto Yeah I guessed they had something to do with it, but if I had taken this shot the lines wouldn't have been anyway near so square and level.... even the shot of the one little memorial in our village came out wonky this morning. (ditto my £50 note which is pretty oblong except in my photo....) Take credit where it's due ;)
November 11th, 2012
@filsie65 - then I won't tell you I was standing up on top of a tall ladder to get this perspective then...
November 11th, 2012
@bobfoto That was one helluvan impressive tripod then sir...!
November 11th, 2012
WOW. the POV on this is fabulous. and the depth, very impressive Jason.
November 11th, 2012
@filsie65 - thanks.... tripod?

@adifferenteye - Thank you Dar, thanks!
November 11th, 2012
Very moving to see this cemetery where so many are buried so far away of their homeland. When I first saw your shot, it reminded me of the one in Normandy, which I visited a couple of years ago.
November 11th, 2012
@anazad511 - Thanks Ana, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission do an amazing job looking after these cemeteries around the globe... but the numbers of headstones is so sad. :(
November 12th, 2012
Amazing photo which just draws your eye in.

November 23rd, 2012
An amazing shot.... and thought. It's easy to forget sacrifices, and I'm glad there are those who truly try to remember and honor those that gave their all.
