Male Ribbon Tailed Astrapia by bobfoto

Male Ribbon Tailed Astrapia

Also in the Province of Enga near the base of Mt Hagen, I spotted this male Ribbon Tailed Astrapia, a plain black bird with two white tail feathers that are 1 metre in length. The make up of his tiny breast and head feathers reflect the light and makes this guy shine from green to blue. Hard to focus on because the camera gets confused by his sheen.

Still a goregeous (sic) Bird of Paradise.
WOWA! look at those colours! 1mtr long tail feathers... thats gotta way ones ass end down!!

Judging by the DOF you had to catch him through that dense foliage ! Great find and shot, Jason!

Incredible! You even see the glow about him in the photo. What an amazing place.

@geocacheking - Oh the dances are amazeballs!

A long tail like that must produce some aeronautical drag. Amazing colors.

wow, just gorgeous
November 15th, 2012
They are stunning birds.
November 15th, 2012
Incredible that its tail feathers are so long. Such a beautiful bird
November 15th, 2012
Love how the sheen has made some of the feathers look vibrant green.
November 15th, 2012
Beautiful bird. Nice composition too!
November 15th, 2012
Love those colors, like a peacock.
November 15th, 2012

November 16th, 2012
I want this bird!
November 16th, 2012
Does my arse look big like this?
November 16th, 2012
@rvwalker - I would agree, but they seem to cope okay when flying through the forests. The two tail feathers look quite delicate trailing behind.

@helenw2 - Yeah he's a lovely bird!

@girlie - always loved seeing the BofPs.

@michelleyoung - Just like the men in the Highlands of New Guinea, they do their best to look good!

@onie - the colour would change ever so slightly depending on the angle of the sun.

@mejbronant - Thanks Mair. :)

@tthompsonca - I guess that do look a little like a Peacock.

@ravdeepkaur - Thank you Ravdeep :)
November 16th, 2012
@mej2011 - :D. But you got the cute little Hummingbirds, I want some of those! Oh and wait until you see my latest download... about to happen.

@kjarn - nah, just long.
November 16th, 2012
@bobfoto
But the cute little hummingbirds are gone for the winter now. :( Now it's mostly ugly crows and boring sparrows.
November 17th, 2012
Can't imagine such long tail feathers, I'll have to go Wiki it.....
Amazing tail, but your shot is better than the Wiki one! So sad to think it is so threatened. You've done a great job on the colours
November 17th, 2012
@mej2011 - well this guy is simply black like a crow... just got some bling on?

@filsie65 - The sad thing is, they moult each year and drop their prized feathers but PNGeans are greedy and will hunt them NOW so they don't miss out on the moult. So they kill a bird to get feathers today :(
November 17th, 2012
@bobfoto
No he's not. He's got some iridescent green color to him, like a Grackle. Grackle's are pretty, they're just jerks.
November 18th, 2012
@mej2011 - Jerks!?!? That's funny... poor Grackles.
November 18th, 2012
@bobfoto
Yes Jerks! They kept killing the sparrows this summer.
November 18th, 2012
@mej2011 - Sparrows or Spoggies are pests over here, so send over some of those Grackles!
November 18th, 2012
Awesome capture, Jason!
November 18th, 2012
@orangecrush - Cheers Jerry, he was a cool bird!
