Sicklebird mannameri

High up in the mountains of Papua New Guinea, is the small province of Enga. On the border is Mt Hagen and at the base is a small lodge which operates for the eco tourist who wants to see the rugged heart of PNG. They have a feeding table where they put out a few pieces of fruit and vegetables and from time to time a few birds fly in and have a quick feed and then they retreat back into the dark jungle.

Here is a breeding pair of Sicklebirds. Like yesterday's Ribbon Tailed Astrapia, the male Sicklebird has modified feathers on his head and back which reflect blue light, and absorb all other colours. Its a neat trick which this lady likes because they were hanging around together all day.

Love their blue eyes.

Want just for the pretty eye color alone! However, I'd be afraid it would eat me!

@daisy - they are cool beaks indeed!

@mej2011 - No, it may nibble on your toes, but I don't think they will find you that tasty!

gorgeous birds, my favourites are still hornbills - I know earlier in the year you said you'd post some , did I miss them in my break from 365 or are they yet to come?

@lbmcshutter - December is a great month for Hornbills and I have previewed the shot in question... I think there was a female back here:

@kjarn - Oh yeah, cool looking beaks indeed.

@tigerdreamer - I think he may have been between breeding plumage, so a tail should be on the way.

@rvwalker - aren't they just!

ah yes, I knew you'd told me that there would be more on hornbills later in the year, I can see that comment along with that wonderful shot

@lbmcshutter - yeah the male will be on the December list.

@filsie65 - I get blown away by all the little Hummingbirds my USA friends post here on the 365!

@agentzuckerguss - the rule in the bird world and definitely in the Birds of Paradise category is that the Males are the spectacular pretty ones with colour and the ladies are often drab and brown. Although the girl in this shot is kinda colourful???

@houdiniem - They were pretty cool, hopping around while I drank my morning cup of tea...

@fjh - a collection of my birdnerd photos can be found here Francesca: http://www.flickr.com/photos/birdtown/
