Lucas

While Ishmael was Boss Guide and Ken was Raskol Guide, we still needed a porter or two, so here is Lucas. He carried my pack and offered the occasional cheeky photobomb over the next few days. Lucas was really quiet and shy at first but he warmed up as we descended from Papua New Guinea's highest mountain down to the coast.

Protocol on a walk like this means one has to stop and chat to everyone along the journey. It offers a moment of rest and the traveller can pass on vital information. When we first took off from Betty's Lodge and were up high on a ridge, Lucas here met a few of his old school chums who were sitting on a cliff overlooking their school, a few hundred metres below. My GF shook the hands of these young students and got chatting to them. Ishmael whispered to me, that it was probably the first time a white female had openly approached these young men and talked with them. He said that the boys would feel a little intimidated but excited at the same time. And you could see in their body languages and the way they really wanted to grin like Cheshire Cats, but they were holding back the smile, just to still look cool.

When it was time to continue our walk, I took a few photos of the students and GF waved goodbye and we all shook hands. One young man whom I think was named Aloysius took his bilum from around his neck, emptied the contents of a few pens and a notebook into his pocket and he offered the bilum to my GF has a gift.

She protested and said that she had many bilums herself but he insisted and wanted her to carry it on her journey. We all then waved goodbye and continued our long walk.

You can see the track here behind Lucas. This was once a sealed road, in fact it was known as the Bundi Highway. Trucks would traverse this road high up into the spine of PNG. Would have been quite the journey back then...

Was he barefoot during the trek? That in itself would be quite a story.

Great shot, he does look shy.. I can imagine that not many white females pass through.

wonderful story and portrait. He does seem to have that shy look about him, but through your words sounds very kind.

Great portrait. Lucas's personality shines through.

@houdiniem - he was well skilled in the art of.

@rvwalker - Yup, like Ishmael, he would carry his flip-flops in his hands and maybe put them on at the end of the day... don't want to wear those things out eh?

@michelleyoung - It certainly wasn't on the tourist maps this walk... we were a long way from home!

@kdimagery - He was a nice guy Lucas.

@daisy - Thanks Kathryn!

@abhijit - Cheers Abhijit.

He doesn't look like a raskol. He looks like a kind soul.

Nice view and pic of him. Looking forward to seeing the photobombing :)

Nice looking lad.

Not been about for awhile but just catching up your shots and stories are still well worth looking at and reading great work.

Great shot of the guide and the track. He looks like a sweet guy!

@grammyn totally agree with katy! :)

@onie - You got that right. No raskol here... (although it is common knowledge that there is a little bit of raskol in all of us)

@alia_801 - Sorry Alia, there was almost a picture of him photobombing but I only have so many days in the month.

@kjarn @grammyn @agentzuckerguss - Thanks Ladies, Lucas was a good lad, quiet but in the moments that he started talking, his personality came through. He did kinda let Boss Ishmael and Raskol Ken dominate the discussions though. On our last day, we found a waterfall, and the weather was getting hot and sticky so the whole load of us, went for a dip in the really cold mountain water. Lucas here had his nephew with us at that stage and Lucas really relaxed and enjoyed himself in the water. It was fun to see, but sooooo very cold!

@hobgoblinwychwo - Thanks John, I had noticed you had been quiet so you have been missed. Welcome back and thank you.

Great set of portraits Jason!

@ruthmouch - Thank you.

Great portrait, he looks quiet and gentle - well done on capturing him. (Then again you could be looking at the shots and describing what you think we'll see and fooling us!) (nah don't believe it ...)

@filsie65 - nah, I am being honest with youse all.

It looks very steamy in the back ground.
Lucas looks like an interesting person. From this photo I'd have thought he was a bit thoughtful but mischievous.

@hellcat - we were still up in the clouds at this point, still around 10,000ft up. Lucas was a nice guy, a little quiet though.
December 3rd, 2012
Those are clouds?!
December 3rd, 2012
@hellcat - yeah pretty much, as they were racing up from the valley below the trees would catch onto their edges and pull them apart a little so they were pretty raggy by the time they floated past us.

We have a tree line... the trees stop growing after a certain elevation. Still, I don't feel it's been very often that we've traveled through clouds to get to the top of one of our mountains. Maybe it's been too long and a trip is in order.

@hellcat - In New Zealand, I spent a morning skiing above the clouds. Above me only blue skies, around me only bright white mountain top snow, and below, a blanket of clouds as far as you could see. It was amazeballs!
December 5th, 2012
Oh wow! That sounds amazeballs.
...more on Susan later...
