Kalibobo Haus bilong Paia

No trip to Madang is complete without a photograph of the Kalibobo Lighthouse. This iconic beacon appears on t-shirts, dresses, tea towels, stamps and rock band video clips...

This lighthouse also doubles as a Memorial to the Coastwatchers of Papua New Guinea who lost their lives during the Second World War.

@sarajeal - It is a cool structure!

@maggiemae - While it is not an official maritime beacon, I have been told that all the Skippers use it as it always seems to be working.

@mjmaven - yeah its a neat and modern design for the 1950s.

Very progressive for the 50's........we were lucky to have one small B&W TV in the house in those years!

Looks like a cross between a rocket and a candle. I learn a lot about the world from your pics!

this is 50-year-old lighthouse? it appears so modern, and as Shirley says, so progressive. have never seen one anything remotely like it. very impressive structure and capture, JD.

@mjmaven @btorrey @catsmeowb - Thank you ladies. The first time I saw this lighthouse, I thought "Wow, how cool!" but then when I saw its image everywhere, on t-shirts and tea towels, I became a bit complacent. Oh yeah, the lighthouse. It was only here that I too have noticed that it is a pretty cool design for the era.

Wow- anything but your traditional light house. Great colors here- with the beacon standing out so nicely against the sky.
