San i kamap lo Madang

The rising of the sun is certainly worth getting up early for in Madang.

I went around to a friend's house and asked if I could borrow his bicycle for the day. Riding a bicycle was an uncommon occurrence in Papua New Guinea, the roads were in a poor state and the drivers faired not much better. I had heard of cyclists in Port Moresby being shot at by raskols merely for the sport, so I didn't take my own bike over there. But I figured the novelty of a white guy on a bike in a town like Madang would take the local raskols by surprise.

And it worked a charm. I was chased by every passing child like the Pied Piper, teenagers and young adults would stop, wave and laugh as I pedalled the old rusty dunga around town. I stopped at a few well known watering holes as the journey was a hot and humid one. I think I even did the fcbk selfie shot as I pedalled along like a loon. I had seen the mountains of PNG, ticked off every Province and walked successfully down from the clouds. My first and only bicycle ride in country was relished with every turn of the cranks and creak and groan of the wheel.

I had only a few more weeks left of my posting and I had a broad smile knowing that I had achieved pretty much everything I had set out for... I was ready to head home.

@lbmcshutter @leananiemand @catsmeowb @kareen @cwebb - What an amazing community the 365 crowd is! I have been away for a few days myself, but I return to such a variety of emotions and wonderful people. Megan, good luck with your application, I hope you get great news. Fingers are crossed. Leana, I always appreciate your kind words, especially as I know, your internet time is sporadic and unreliable so the fact that you are taking time out of the saddle to look at my photos and respond is sweet, thank you. Camille, oh I am saddened to hear of your loss, but am happy to hear that you are okay and keen to look at my back catalogue of photos. Thanks. Thank you Kareen, I am so happy that I can put a smile on your face from the other side of the globe! And thank you Cupcake, thank you for the fave and thank you for having such a cute profile name. I do like seeing your name appear. Cupcake, tee hee. :D

Beautiful sunset! Where is Madang?
posted December 9th, 2012
@osophotography - On the northern coast of the eastern end of New Guinea. So the last eastern province of Indonesia is Irian Jaya, or West Papua, and the other independent half of that big island is Papua New Guinea. Madang is on that side.
