Raggiana Bird of Paradise by bobfoto

Raggiana Bird of Paradise

The Raggiana Bird of Paradise is also known as the Kumul. It is the National Bird of Papua New Guinea and has been the subject of many a bird nerd's lens and bins.

This is a shot of a captive Male, in non-breeding plumage, but I did have the pleasure one day of seeing a Male in full breeding plume at a nearby National Park. A spectacular bird indeed.

Photo taken at the Port Moresby Botanic Garden on 8 December 2007.
Oh my! What an awesome looking bird! He looks to be a good size bird.

@camisze - about the size of a Crow, as they happen to be distant relatives...

@girlie - they sure are Robin, there are some spectacular birds to be seen in PNG!

@grammyn - Everything about the Male Bird of Paradise is all about show, his voice, his dancing, his plumage. Its what inspires the dance of many PNGeans!

@camisze @girlie @grammyn @michelleyoung @maggiemae @agentzuckerguss - Thanks ladies... hey I've learnt something today, and I have worked out how to get some of my video footage from Goroka onto Youtube. so if you are keen, take a look at the following link. The Hulimen love the Bird of Paradise and their war dance and song mimic the mating dance of the bird above. I'm no movie maker...

enjoy. http://youtu.be/y9a4AKC77D8

@bobfoto Checked out the video. I remember seeing the Hulimen at some of the sing sings in Lae and Goroka. I took heaps of old movies of the sing sings and must get around to having them converted on to digital sometime.
