Kokomo by bobfoto

Kokomo

The male Blythe's Hornbill is an amazing bird! I posted a pic of a female earlier this year, and I have sat and shared fruit with tame Hornbills on occasion in Papua New Guinea. I have also seen them flap flap flapping their way across the sky from tree to tree. They make a great noise on the wing and make an even greater presence up close.

This particular bird was housed in a large aviary at the Port Moresby Botanic Gardens, I got talking one morning to a member of staff and we chatted about plants and trees and birds. He asked if I wanted to see inside their great huge aviary (locked) and I said of course. It was inside that I got photos of the last two birds. The young gardener told me that they keep the bird enclosures locked to stop people stealing the birds.

He then led me to a large aviary with around 30 male Kokomos and he asked if I wanted to jump inside and get a few photos. Seeing as I only had my kit lens, I relished the opportunity to go inside the cage with these large birds. They hopped around and squarked, and fought amongst themselves as I found a spot without bird droppings to sit, and I remained still. The birds also settled and some of them got closer to me, they were curious and some of them hopped around my feet and behind my back to get a closer look. This bird sat a few feet away and preened itself.

I got a few shots and then excused myself from the cage.

During the next week I was chatting to one of my crew and I showed him this picture, and he asked me where I took this shot, and I told him the Bot Gardens in town. He knew many of the staff of the Bot Gardens and asked who let me in the cage and I told him the name of the young gardener who showed me around. My friend shook his head and said "sori".

I asked what was up, and he said that the young gardener who showed me inside the cage had gone back into the cage sometime after me to feed the birds and one of the birds attacked the young man and had chewed his ear off. Poor young fella...

Beautiful bird, and colors and all. You were reasonably close to him, per the exif. Was he one of the tame ones you referred to? Fav.
December 11th, 2012
Yikes! Poor guy.
December 11th, 2012

December 11th, 2012
Gorgeous bird and pic! Fav!
December 11th, 2012
Awesome picture! Sad to hear about the young man- so odd that they "behaved" for you and hurt him. You'd think it would be the other way around as you were a stranger and didn't feed them.
December 11th, 2012
Add me to the list of fav's. The feather colors are magnificent, but the bill reminds me of something from the dinosaur epoch. Especially when photographed this close.
December 11th, 2012

December 14th, 2012
STUNNING shot!!!
December 14th, 2012
@sticksandstones - I think it may have been the fact I didn't have any food and that kept the birds quiet. Feeding time might be a bit perilous?

@shotsbymeg - Thanks Meghan :)
December 14th, 2012
wow......what an amazing photo, Jason.......the colors are beautiful....a definite fav!
December 15th, 2012

What a fabulous bird photo. How lucky you were able to get a close up shot. I think you are fortunate to not have been dinner. FAV.
December 15th, 2012

Amazing shot. Love his eye!
December 18th, 2012
@anggav - they are a gorgeous bird, and those eyes and eyelashes! Amazeballs!
December 18th, 2012
At first I thought this chap looked a little coy and cute, then I realised he was most likely working out how best to get hold of your ear...
If I was ever to award a ten for a bird shot rather than a blissfully idyllic scene... sori, the ear thing put me off... how about a 9.8....
December 28th, 2012
@filsie65 - 9.8 will do. I have this shot on canvas at home.
December 28th, 2012
Gorgeous bird and photo!
January 3rd, 2013
@hellcat - he sure is. His beak is often seen on the backs of Hulimen when they're out performing. I think my youtube video shows it.
January 3rd, 2013
oh no! one of the crushed and stuffed birdies.
January 4th, 2013
January 4th, 2013
Had to mention to you that I came upon this and it blew my mind. That eye is phenomenal. I had faved it last year, I guess, but WOW!
October 20th, 2013
@amandal - They are such an impressive bird, and to have one clear the wax in one's ear is a moment.
