moon and swift by bobfoto

moon and swift

After spending a hard day's toil at the office, it was time to revert home to the compound, watch the sun rapidly sink beneath the harbour and wait for the darkness to come. I noticed a Papuan Swift sitting on the powerlines and through the razor wire and strands of electric fencing, I captured the small bird silhouetted against the rising moon. I howled once or twice and then ran inside to escape the mosquitos.

I tried photoshopping out the wires, I hear that's what the clone feature is for... gave up after the first dozen or so...

Compound life in Port Moresby.

Photo taken 11 December 2008.
Great capture, I like every element of this picture but it does remind me why, reluctantly, we turned down the opportunity to work in Port Morseby! We moved from Rhodesia with barbed wire fences and guns for protection to Queensland and then had the chance to go to PNG. I'm afraid the wimp in me won out and we stayed in sunny Brisbane - no sense of adventure I fear!!

@judithdeacon - Oh Judith, I think if your experience in Rhodesia was a satisfying yet challenging experience, then PNG would have offered similar rewards? I'm glad you have been able to follow my project this year. Thanks.

why did you want to shop the wires out?? they add so much! :) FAV!
December 12th, 2012
I have to agree with @agentzuckerguss . the wires are an integral part of this shot with its fabulous color and subject!
December 12th, 2012
@agentzuckerguss @grammyn - I was being facetious... I only know words like Photoshop and Clone by association. Have no idea how they work and why a photographer would need to remove things from their photos.

@bobfoto em nau!

I like how all these elements tie together.
December 12th, 2012
Beautiful shot even if it does remind me if being at work. I especially like how well placed the moon and bird are, fave for me.
December 13th, 2012
Great capture - I don't mid the wires in this one
December 13th, 2012
this is so dramatic........love the colors!
December 13th, 2012
One wire would have been intrusive. A sky full of wires, plus razor wire, makes it a photo about wires, and as such, it works very well against the interesting sky.
December 13th, 2012
Cool capture! I like how the birdy is near the Moon, and the patterns the wires make too.
December 13th, 2012
@grammyn - Mi tingim yu rait style meri nau!

@samr - hey thanks Sam!

@rwhite - thanks for the fave Rosie!

@worldbiking - Why thank you Amaya... there is a little something here for everyone.

@kjarn - Thanks Kathy A and you even faved it so you can go back and look at it from time to time and be reminded of work! You're a trooper eh?

@georgews - Thanks GPix, cheers!

@mjmaven - Sunset in the tropics just before the wet season can throw up some great colours!

@rvwalker - Cheers Ross... often, my photography is about capturing a moment, but I gave this image a few seconds of thought as I prepared to compose. A rare moment for me...

@alia_801 - thanks Alia, I surprised myself with this one eh?

Lines, coils and a great sunset glow on the clouds.

Seriously though, this looks great, the colours in the sky are quite spectacular.
December 13th, 2012
Super capture,love the cloud colour and different textures in the wires!!
December 13th, 2012
@houdiniem - birds sitting on a wire can be that.

@onie :D

@carolmw - Thanks Carol :)
December 13th, 2012
I think this looks fantastic with the wires left in.. It really gives a stark contrast.
December 13th, 2012
PhotoShopping all of those wires would have taken hours and then you'd also have to PhotoShop out the bird which, I think, adds interest to the shot.
December 14th, 2012
@michelleyoung - Thanks Michelle, I have no idea what photoshop is so there's no chance of these wires disappearing!

@webfoot - I photoshop nothing. 'Twas being facetious.
December 14th, 2012
This is amazing! Can younstill feel what it was like that night, standing there taking this?
December 14th, 2012
@espyetta - I do. One of the great things I find with my photographs, is that they are like a diary to me. When I revisit these photos, I am taken back to the moment when I stopped and took the shot. I think this is why I can write with such detail to accompany the photos.
December 14th, 2012
nice...dramatic.......and i love barbed wire.
December 14th, 2012
@sticksandstones - then Port Moresby is the town for you!!!
December 14th, 2012
Beautyful! Great colours and capture! Fav
December 14th, 2012
@bobfoto I have not seen such exotic things as you, but I am the same way! It takes you back to the moment you took it...
December 15th, 2012
@rubyred - thanks Katja :)

@espyetta - it sure does. I'm glad others get the same sense too!

@tbats22 - Oh thanks Tiara! :)
December 17th, 2012
Gorgeous. I think the wires add to it, dramatically speaking. Did he fly off when you howled?! :)
December 28th, 2012
@filsie65 - nope, he just invited 32 of his mates.
December 28th, 2012
I agree with @filsie65 .
