Rouna Falls by bobfoto

Rouna Falls

Outside of Moresby up in the Owen Stanley Ranges is a big dam, which supplies the Papua New Guinea capital, Port Moresby with water and electricity through a series of hydro power plants.

There is a waterfall near one of the hydro plants call Rouna Falls and there's a little old lookout and sometimes, there's some locals who tried to fleece a few coins from you in order to take a photograph. Despite none of the locals owning the water, the waterfalls or the hydro plant.

They just want betelnut.

Stunning!

@bobfoto So I’m assuming from your narrative that the surrounding area might not be as pretty with a big hydro power plant? I love how photographs can show just the beautiful parts and omit the not so pretty. Niagara Falls was a big letdown for me when I saw it in real life, surrounded by shopping malls and parking lots.

Fantastic shot!

Nice. I know it is not easy to go back, but a longer exposure might have rendered the falling water as a lovely layer of silk?
December 28th, 2012
Powerful falls, wow!
December 28th, 2012
Fabulous waterfall shot!
December 28th, 2012

December 28th, 2012
I like this as is, Jason! how much did you have to pay for the shot?!
December 29th, 2012
Fantastic. The waterfall surrounded by all the greenery. Was it loud?
December 29th, 2012
Gorgeous shot! A fav. Why would anyone need betelnut, if one had a view like this!
December 29th, 2012

What a stunning natural sight. Imagine falling down there. Yikes. Are you doing another 365?
December 29th, 2012
There world is ruled by that dreaded nut.. Here in Scotland we have a lot of mountains, lochs & falls.. (though several hours drive for me).. Most are used to harness energy through hydroplants.. Makes sense in this world.

Beautiful shot, beautiful location.. I wish i was there,

Stunning capture!! Fav!!
December 29th, 2012
everyone else says it too but it´s just so true: STUNNING! :)

@corymbia @melwolters - Thanks Amanda, thanks Mel :)

@lisjam1 - Not really, the Hydro plant here was small(ish) and hidden back into the mountain, and behind some very large trees. In fact it was hard to see from this angle.

@chrismarfil @camisze - Thanks Chris and Cathy :)

@paulavdmerwe - Is that a new profile pic?

@frankhymus - because it was such an aggressive and pounding waterfall, I decided to try and capture the big splash!

@archaeofrog @boatpainter @maggiemae - Thanks ladies and I reckon' Maggiemae that yes, this location is unlikely to change too much.

@loztsoul - Thanks Trevor.

@grammyn - I think it was K10 or around $5. Not much but it was dubious as to whom were really landowners or not.

@onie - little bit noisy... not too bad really.

@daisy - Exactly!

@kjarn @mandyj92 @tigerdreamer - Thanks Kathy A, Amanda F and Karen H.

@swguevin @swilde - Thanks Sheila and Sue!

@houdiniem - aaaaahhhhh!

@sangwann @peterdegraaff - Thanks Guys!

@kareen - I will be Kareen, I've got an new outlook on how I approach it. And will you still be around?

@michelleyoung - it feels good to know that the Cities water and power is all being supplied by the same source.

@carolmw - Thanks Carol and thanks for the fave :)
December 29th, 2012
I don't think so Jason. It's taking up way too much of my time but I may pop back every so often.
December 29th, 2012
December 30th, 2012
@kareen - that's a shame. Will look forward to you popping by then.

@grammyn - Would prefer to see some regulation in the tourism industry, so people know whether or not their donation is really going towards keeping a site maintained or not.

Love the feeling of power in this!! What a huge cascade.... bet it sounded fabulous too!
(I lurve waterfalls - what is it about them?!)
December 30th, 2012
@filsie65 - I know... everyone drives past a meandering river but a cascading waterfall is like fireworks!
December 30th, 2012
Excellent capture of this magnificent waterfall!!! How tall is it? Did you pay them to take the shot?
December 30th, 2012
WoW!!! This is stunning!
December 30th, 2012
@anazad511 - I've never thought about the height... It is not a huge waterfall but it is impressive. And yes, I paid them, I also took their photos and had a good chat. Made them earn their Kina.

@monkeykid - Thanks Monkeykid! :D (cool profile name Therese!)
December 30th, 2012
@bobfoto I agree with you. Glad you paid to them; the conversation is worth much more.
December 30th, 2012
@anazad511 - Thanks Ana.
December 30th, 2012
@bobfoto That makes sense! I hadn't thought of that
December 30th, 2012
@grammyn - half the time, it felt like some guy off the street would just rush over and be the first to get some cash from the tourist... "Hi, I'm a landowner"
December 30th, 2012
@bobfoto I guess opportunists are everywhere!
December 30th, 2012
@grammyn - they sure are.
December 30th, 2012
This shot was taken on my birthday :) What a magnificent place.
December 31st, 2012
