Rabaul Chinese Cemetery by bobfoto

Rabaul Chinese Cemetery

Chapter 89.

Decided to go over to old Rabaul Town and check out the excavation of the old Chinese Cemetery. After several eruptions in the past 80 years and especially the big one in 1994, the old cemetery under the caldera of Tavuvur is well, getting covered in ash.

So an exhumation has been called for to re-raise the headstones.

The bodies which once were 6ft under in some cases were 15ft under. This was one of the deepest.

to be continued.
Great capture and story. We can't really under estimate the power of nature;)

The monochrome-feel adds to the atmosphere of this shot! A really story-teling picture!

@snowflakes86 @agentzuckerguss @carolmw - I was quite impressed with the size of the undertaking and they've naturally dug up some interesting problems along their way.

So the ground is all ash based now! Very hard to grow anything there. These stones would have historical value!

Hmmm...and interesting activity. I wonder if the occupants really care

Fascinating cemetery photo and story. I would love to see this place. In the USA, thousands of Chinese immigrated to work on building railroads and mining. The death rate was appalling, and after a couple of years the survivors dug up the bones in many cemeteries and shipped them back to China. I have found Chinese graveyards in ghost towns that had a row of open graves being slowly reclaimed by nature.

@maggiemae - with some organic material, it is quite a healthy dirt.

@swilde - their family do.

@rvwalker - might see if there is room for a wider shot...

@redpants - yeah... someone mentioned it at lunch yesterday, so I thought I'd go see the excavation. Few questions were asked at breakfast today.
