Pike's Peak RR Engine #1

64 / 365
The Manitou & Pikes Railway engine #1 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works out of Philadelphia prior to 1890 to operate up to Pike's Peak, Colorado. The cog rails were built in 1890 and was completed in 4 months. The steep grade was from 16% to 40%. The engine had a gear that engaged the center tooth rail for traction. The boiler was built on an incline so that it was level when traveling. Colorado Railroad Museum.

Did you go up Pike's Peak....it was awesome! Great shot. I didn't remember that about the boiler.

Nice shot of a historical machine! I remembered at once your cowboy robbers on horses chasing for such engines...

A great shot of a fascinating machine! - I saw a rack railway working in Switzerland once, and they are a spectacular sight.
