Walthamstow School of Shorthand and Typewriting

There is a reference in British History Online to a Walthamstow school of shorthand and typewriting, founded in 1895 and known from 1933 as Walthamstow business college. It closed in 1957. Wonder if this was an advert for the same.

Busy old morning - doing some last-minute jobs before a pleasant mother and daughter came round to view the flat. Then more trips to the storage place and the dump. And then we headed off to view a place. It was virtually in the village and with a price tag to match but was so small and poky and the owners had done nothing to hide their mess and clutter, it made us feel like paragons of domestic virtue when we got back to our now relatively pristine flat. Needless to say we won't be putting in an offer - it would have given us one tiny room more in space than what we already have.

Then lunch in the Village pub which has changed hands recently. Quite pleasant if slow service.

Still absolutely freezing and no let-up in the near future - this time last year it was warm and sunny.

May be that was the school? So disheartening house hunting........and then again can be uplifting.......you need energy and imagination, will be doing the same myself sometime soon!!

Nice ghostie! Thank goodness women are allowed in the board room as well as the typing pool these days....

Sounds like a definite maybe! It's nice to see people capturing these bits of fading history. Well done mate.

I had the same reaction as Jan Hall did! I like the faded nature of the sign -- and the context framing it.

Love to hear of your housing stories ....keep them coming!!!!! When I left school this was the kind of establishment that was one option for you when you left ....to be a secretary or shorthand typist. The options open to today's school leavers is exciting compared with those days. I must say this close well before I left school .........well not too well before if you know what I mean!!

Good job you're not doing your full weather review this year - we'd have to slash our wrists. It's amazing how mucky some people are - I'm afraid I have a couple of neighbours I'd like to take a scrubbing brush to - and it's not like I'm exactly pristine!

Oh and interesting wall - must be one and the same...reminds me of No1 Ladies' Detective Agency & The Botswana Secretarial College.

Cool - love old signs and hoardings.

When I was quite heavily pregnant JB's boss lent me an old book he'd had when his kids were born. My favourite bit was that after 24 weeks gestation wimminz should be at home and not at work "however much they might try to argue that their secretarial duties are in fact less onerous than scrubbing floors..."
