My subject came to me so to speak. we're having some huge trees removed. 60 or even 80 years ago people planted trees as markers for their lot lines. yes these trees are that old and have reached a height of about 65 - 75 feet, so you can imagine what their root circumference is like - enormous - by now the branches of these trees reach over our house. I don't really want to know what their root system is like.
@mbemis thank you Mannie for your comment. It didn't last that long. the guy in the tree was a new trainee and not quite ready for the job. the fellow who was suppose to start cutting the outer branches off had a bad back and was in pain. he was suppose to guide the new guy along from ground level. I guess the new guy didn't work out and so they left for today to come back within a week, we hope. things like this can happen, I guess.
I'm always sad to see a tree get cut down, but you do have to protect your house. I could also see how training someone from the ground might not be the most conducive to learning. I see them in my mind with the guy on the ground pointing and saying, "That branch" and the trainee replying, "This branch?" "No that branch" "This branch?" "NO! THAT branch..." I hope they'll be able to work something out for you- good catch for today though.
@prttblues Bev the tree is mostly on our neighbor's lot behind us, but enough of it is directly on the lot line and has grown on to our side. this is what they will remove. it's hard to explain to understand. I might just take a picture of it and send it to you per e-mail. did you happen to read a comment I sent to Mannie? this is what I wrote: thank you for your comment. @cejaanderson Jane it's a big job and should've done already years ago. all the wood goes to our neighbour. the guys from the tree service just have to throw it over the fence into his back yard. he will use it in his fireplace. btw the job didn't get done today. apparently the fellow who climbed the tree to remove some of the larger branches was a new fellow and not quite ready for the job. the guy who was suppose to do it had hurt his back and was in great pain. to make a long story short, they quit after an hour and postponed the cutting until he feels better. we have three tree services in our town and all three are booked so far in advance. the company we chose is the most reasonable one and is very busy so that another crew was not readily available, but the job will get done, we just have to wait our turn.
I try not to think of roots either as shrubs can have a large root system too and some of ours do. Trees are another story. So many plant trees for shade and over plant them, put too many in or too large of a tree for the spot they plant them. Nice shot, Bruni. They have been cutting back trees here as they grow.
We have some very large trees close to our house so when we replaced the old cottage on the site with our new house we had to have it built on piles that go down over 60ft into the ground. The cottage that it replaced had just a few rows of strong bricks for its foundations!!!
@paulaw That sounds like our place. we too had a cottage on the lot with bricks on all corners for foundation. no heat, just a fireplace. it had an outhouse as the sewer wasn't in town yet. the area close to Lake Simcoe, where we live, was strictly cottage country in those days. we loved spending time at the cottage and later built our home once the sewers came in. we sat the house further back on the lot not to look at the neighbor' house at least not from the two bay windows in the living. Hans built our home in 1987 and went down quite deep with foundation and filled it up later so that our basement has large windows just above ground level. it doesn't feel like your in a basement. now that we're just the two of us, the house is way too big. we decided on converting the downstairs into a good size apartment, which we're renting out.
our last tenant was with us for 9 years. a gentleman, single who over the years became like family to us. have to see how we're making out this time.
@prttblues I'll try. say what does the D stand for. if seen it sometimes on other comments.I didn't get to post pictures yesterday and will do so now. also look for an e-mail today. till later!
