He's so cool!!

Wow- interesting catepillar. I can't find a match in my bug book! He looks similar to Tobacco Hornworm (but you're out of the range for that one) and a Polyphemus Moth (but that one is segmented whereas this one looks smooth) so I will just have to admire his coloring and spike! Nice close-up!!

Does he smell? That spikey thing looks similar to the spike that some caterpillars put out when feeling threatened and they are sooo stinky. Great capture! Love that shade of green

Interesting little guy

Bruni- I think I might have been right when I said it was the Hornworm- if you go to MaryBeth Dailey's photos, she has hatched a whole batch of these little guys. Yours might be getting ready to go to the pupa stage. (see Aug 25th especially)
August 26th, 2011
Oh no, wait, the one I just looked at was dated Aug. 1. I guess she's filling in dates. Anyway- give them a look. They're very close in looks to this guy!
August 26th, 2011
One more time- she has them all tagged "hornworm" or Tobacco Hornworm.

@olivetreeann Love all your comments. you're reffering so another 365ers post...I still haven't been able to find out how you find someone when they are not a friend or follower of yours. on the top line of our page is a spot where it says Search. I've tried to enter her name but nothing comes up. can you send me MaryBeth's URL so that I can get into her pictures?? maybe you know of another way to search for someone? if so would you share it with me please?

Your little "find" appears to be a Tomato Hornworm because the "horn" on his rear is black (not red, like the Tobacco Hornworm) ...that is IF he is a hornworm....I cannot see his stripes too well....Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca Sexta) have only 7 white stripes and Tomato Hornworm's (Manduca quinquemaculata) have 8 stripes. It seems like I see 7 here, but with the black horn, that is not a Tobacco Hornworm. I also learned that their names aside, both kinds of Sphinxmoth/hornworm eat Tobacco or tomato plant leaves.....so their names sort of make no sense....

Did you keep him?

@espyetta Love that you decided to follow me. So will I you. to your question: no, I went out to look for him but can't find him..was just wondering if he's the culprit why I find tomatoes on the ground mostly overnight..they have lots of bite marks.

what do you think or do they only eat the leaves of the tomato plant?
August 26th, 2011
Whoa, this is a cool find Bruni. Never saw a uni-horn before. Thanks for sharing. Are there enough of them in your backyard. Maybe this guy was the culprit, having a great feast of your tomatoes. :-)
August 26th, 2011
I was going to say he is a tomato hornworm! If you have tomatoes, I would definitely say so!
August 26th, 2011
@autumnseden thank you commenting. Yes we have tomatoes. most of them were touched and down on the ground..so does the hornworm eat the leaves or also bites into the tomato??
August 26th, 2011
@bugik Thank you Bugik..no we only saw the one but havee so many tomatoes on the ground before they are ripe. all have bites out of them.

@bruni As far as I know just the leaves but I could be wrong. I suspect that other critters are getting to what has dropped.
