Whenever I go to Lake Superior, I find myself stacking rocks into a "zen pile" or as more often called a Cairn. Some people meditate as they place each rock, I like to name someone or something I'm thankful for. Of course, my pile would be a lot taller if I had a stone for each person I'm thankful for (but that's all I could balance).
From the internet: Cairn Rock Formations: If you have ever hiked on a trail or up a mountain, there is no doubt you will have seen piles of rocks stacked on top of each other. These rock formations are called Cairns, and their purpose was to alert hikers that they are indeed on the right trail. They are periodically placed for two reasons: one being to verify the right path when returning, and the second to notify future hikers that they are indeed on the right path. If you are ever lost, coming across a Cairn should be of great relief because it generally means there are others nearby which should lead you to safety.
Nice photo and interesting information. I have never done that practice but I can tell you that when I moved 12 yards of river rock around my yard, I found it very Zen. I enjoyed the process.
Very nice shot. Very strong composition. You've got the Rule of Thirds down pat. I like the way the vertical stack of rocks interrupts the horizontal elements. And the varying color of the rocks are both subtle and sublime. Nice job.
