Creeping fig covers many of the walls of Atalaya, planted first when the home was built in the 1930's. The mortar seems to be oozing from the brick walls and from what I have learned it is called an extruded mortar joint or weeping joint. Fairly common in South Carolina, not recommended for colder climates as I guess water would freeze along the joints and it would break off. The brick interior walls had smooth joints and the walls whitewashed.
