The castle itself was first built in stone around 1141. Though there had been a Roman fortress there previously, all of the generations taking advantage of the excellent defensive position. This part is a little newer & is known as the observatory tower & was added by the Victorians ! It was built on top of the old stone work.
Taken on our climb up Hill, we took a different route to mostly avoid the crush of people heading up Steep Hill. This was through a gap between two houses. Quite a garden view!
