Bark by carvl

Bark

We moved the sheep on our farm today from one of block land to another. Afterwards I walked round the field trying to find a good picture. I struggle with landscapes though, everything I take always looks very one dimensional. In the end I took some close ups of a stand of birch trees. Does anyone else struggle with landscape photography?
Lovely composition and texture

Nice, I really like the way the textures overlap. It's not easy to notice.

I cannot claim to be an expert in any genre of photography, but, having also taken plenty of landscapes that were, quite frankly, underwhelming, these might help in your quest...
Unless it's a look you want, avoid flat light, from uniform cloudy skies (little contrast), or clear blue sky, as at least a third of your picture will be pretty featureless. And you've probably read or heard it loads of times, but it really is all about the light - so try around sunrise or sunset, and especially if the weather is bad as there's often some good light and/or interesting sky when the cloud starts to break up. Low sunlight and the shadows it casts also accentuates shapes and textures for more obvious depth. Hope it helps a bit - if you have time, look up Thomas Heaton on Youtube, I've found him very helpful.

@guymundo thank you so much for your comments, yes you are definitely right about the light , and I will look up Thomas Heaton. I guess it's a case of practice, practice , practice !!
