Fire is at the root of all things both visible and invisible
The designer named him Man of Fire - to represent the "great fires which dominate the life of the Potteries". The quote above is written at the base of the sculpture. At the time it was put up (1963/4) the area was still full of Potbanks plus the iron and steelworks at Shelton Bar and this is what inspired sculptor David Wynne. Many of the locals, including me, call him Jack Frost. As a child I found him scary but awe-inspiring. I love him. Best public work in the Potteries.
