This is a very thin and long Island in the Venetian laguna, whos inhabitants are mainly fishermen. The green fields that you see between the laguna on the left and the beach and the open sea on the right are orchards. In the past we spent a few summers in a large house overlooking the laguna. Behind the house and up to the road running along the beach there were fields of artichokes.
Yes. You are right, especially out of season. Venice unfortunately has become such a turistic attraction as to lose her face as a city. My parents in law were born and grown up in Venice but at a certain point in old age were forced to leave by the lack of shops for daily life( not boutiques and souvenirs') and by the crowds in the calli. It is a difficult conundrum. Venice withou turists will die, but Venice with too many turists will die. Not the small islands, though!
I was in Venice once. Wonderfull but too crowded! Must be so strange and difficult for 'the locals' to survive.
What a great youth memory. I would love to see artichoke fields.
