@jamibann thank you. Yes there is a lot of people on the trail to the Three Peaks. Although it's a little postcard-ishI will end up posting my photo of them
@taffy In reality it is less stark an difficult than it looks. It becomes more difficult as you leave it towards another hut from which you see the 3 Peaks
@olivetreeann@jgpittenger Thank you for your comments. Yes the view is great. I have posted it as View from the Hut Lavaredo and it justifies all these visitors, even from Japan (see, if you wish, Doubtful posted yesterday
@caterina I know Caterina - we're about to add to the hordes ourselves as we leave for holidays on Friday. It's just a sign of the times but I can see why locals in some areas must hate the invasion. You must get more than your share in your lovely country.... :)
@robz oh yes Rob. It’s a difficult conundrum because on one side tourists bring much needed money and workplaces, on the other some of the cities and villages completely lose their atmosphere and personality. The typical example is Venice where the locals are much less than the visitors and the markets and food shops have been substituted with elegant boutiques in the best of cases or by Chinese souvenir kiosks in the worst. My parents in law who lived all of their lives in Venice at a certain age were forced to go away and live in an easier place. Nevertheless Venice is magical and we go there as often as possible. What would happen to the city without tourists? What would the people who make a living with restaurants, hotel, etc do? Verona has also her share of tourism, but we move around easily out of the main sites. Sorry for the long answer, but this is a very touchy subject at present.
@caterina Thanks Caterina for sharing your thoughts on the positives and negatives of tourism. What you have outlined is very similar to the situation where I grew up. The Gold Coast in Queensland is a favourite tourist destination because of our beaches. I was born there and in the 60's, 70's and 80's most people on the Coast knew many of the other families who lived there and most people you met on the beaches were locals. Now it's like Venice - with a terrible traffic problem to go with it. This is one reason why we bought the funny little farm in Stanthorpe. But there are a lot more jobs available and a lot more facilities. As you say - it is a conundrum. Anyway - we're heading to the UK and then onto various parts of Scandinavia - should be very exciting. I hope to be able to put up some photos and see those of other 365ers as we travel. Cheers for now Rob
