The name given to the area South East of the city of Siena literally means Senese clays, because here the land is made of clay, the sediments of the Piocene sea that covered the area 3 million years ago. The entire area, Val d'Orcia, is fascinating, punctuated here and there by pine and cypress trees, vineyards and farms.

@caterina Oh yes, I remember that. And I have visited Sienna (many years ago) but I can't recall travelling through this area, which I am rather sorry about!
@caterina -- I was only in China for four full days, and it took me a day and a half of travel each way! That means I can post seven photos of China, right?
