Monastery Petra

You can reach this iconic place climbing 800 steps or riding a mule. I wanted to post this after hearing of the disastrous floods that hit Petra just a couple of days after our visit. I hope the damage was not too great and that the monuments will be in good condition. It must be said that the civil servants and even more the bedouins that live or work in the site were great in saving 3700 tourists present at the time the water came down roaring
Eek, that sounds like you were lucky...

Those people are so tiny! Great cap and let’s hope the floods didn’t do too much damage human or not

Wonderful, enormous structure. Mind boggling really - the way it's been built into those cliffs.

@stimuloog Yes Marloes, we were really lucky. We also went to the Dead Sea a couple of hours before a landslide blocked the highway!

@samae @helenhall @paul10 Thank you for your comments. Indeed Indiana Jones at the last crusade was shot in Petra. I want to watch it again after having been there

@phil_howcroft @robz It is enormous and like all the other buildings inside the canyon and in the mountain were carved in the rock. Really unbelievable

Wow! I know that when rain hits there, great wadi's fill quickly and dangerously. So sad that Petra, filled up... Glad everyone got to safety. It rained once in Aquaba when I was there, and I was camping down by the ocean... the police came and excitedly told me to move to higher ground, and good thing too as when it hit so much was washed away. They said it hadn't rained there in years.

The good news @stefneyhart is that the day after the big flood Petra was open again and working!
