Red-breasted Sapsucker

Not what I was looking for, but hey I'll take it! He was super pretty and somewhat cooperative.

It was weird, all my shots looked super blurry on my camera monitor, but when I get home they were not bad. Especially with such a high ISO.

Just reminds me not to delete in the field.:-))
Nice depth of field! Perfectly posed!

@mikegifford I'm about 3 hours south of you. We get them around this time every year. I only find a few a year and they are always in Pepper trees

@catwhiskers Weird, I don't see them in the Bay Area, but maybe in the Valley or just central and southern California? I just checked my Merlin Bird ID application and it says all along the California and costal areas up into Canada.

@mikegifford they are very skittish and elusive. If your ever near pepper trees, lol for there holes in the trees. They make little holes in straight rows for the sap

@catwhiskers The Merlin ID app's map does say indicate it is seasonal in breeding and non-breeding areas, and up north above the Bay Area they are year around.
