Milky Way by catwhiskers

Milky Way

Tonight was a good night to practice the Milky Way since there was no moon, however the Best part of the Way was not visible. But, I want to get this night shooting down before the good Way is visible.

Lessons learned tonight:

1. Don't forget the cable release. Although the self timer worked okay since I didn't do too long of an exposure.

2. Get a loop so I can focus better. It is really hard to focus in the dark!

3. Find a place that gets darker then where I live.

4.Get a better camera that handles noise better...... Hummm that one may have to wait:-)

Here is one I did where is was a lot darker and turned out better except the really light part of the Way was all I had to work with.

looks great nan! isn't the 7d reaally good in the noise department? i guess few cams do great at 6400 iso, huh? did you run it through a noise reduction sw? regardless, i love this look, and if i wasn
t so lazy lately, would love to do more night shooting.

This looks awesome to me! Would love to get a Milky Way shot!

@pixelchix Actually, the 7D isn't that great at noise. I know the Nikon D3 does a really good job, but that is super expensive and I'm not going to switch at this point. I was wondering is the Canon 5D did a better job at it. I have been eyeballing that. Drool Drool:-) Maybe when the mark 3 come out I may have to break down and get one. I did run it through noise reduction, and it helped a pinch, but not that much.

Beth and Mimi want to do another Milky Way shoot. Tonight was just practice but when we go if you guys want to join us let me know! It would be fun to get a group together.

@catwhiskers oh yes! please let us know! we'd love to go. I have a d700, same sensor as the D3, and it is fantastic...but i do miss having that crop sensor when shooting wildlife or sports. Jenn is a lucky dog, has both the 7D and 5d2...the best of both worlds!

@catwhiskers also, have you tried doing the darkframe noise reduction when you take the pic? it doubles your waiting time, but it extracts the the noise from the dark frame it takes and really helps when using hight iso like that. not even my d700 performs great at 6400 iso at night.

@pixelchix I'm not sure what darkframe noise is? I did do high ISo noise reduction though, not sure if that is the same thing. I've read that you really need a full frame sensor to do these night shots, so, I'm surprised it did as well as it did. Thanks for the info!!!!

@pixelchix Lucky you!! If I had it to do over, I probably would have gone the Nikon route. But, I have too much invested in the Canon realm. What does Jenn think of the %D for night stuff?? Just curious? I'll for sure keep you guys in mind for a Milky Way shoot! That would be fun!

Exquisitely beautiful. What an awesome shot... if it gets better than this I can't wait, but it's a definite FAB FAV for me regardless!! We get too much light pollution to even see it like this never mind record it. Wonderful

@filsie65 Thank you so much! I could sit our every night and star at the skies! Luckily I can get kind of dark skies a few miles out from where I live, but nothing like you get in the desert etc.

Wow, gorgeous! I'm lucky if I can see 10 stars in the night sky here.

October 23rd, 2011
fantastic, I have been trying to get star trails, but not too successfully, probably a silly question but what do you mean by get a loop?
October 23rd, 2011
Fantastic!!!!!
October 23rd, 2011
Love this. Have you tried star trails?

@tkeen Hi Toni, thanks for your comment I really appreciate it. I meant to say loupe. It is a little magnifying glass. Here is the one I want to get, it fits on the LCD screen and helps you get a better focus. A must have for someone like me with bad vision. LOL

I'm going to try star trails next. That will take more time and practice. :-)

October 23rd, 2011
@mimigd This was out by Lopez. It was kind of a spur of the moment zip out there. Was not sure what I'd get. I noticed that there was no moon so i took a chance and went. I'll let you know next time I go.
October 23rd, 2011
@mimigd By the way, it wasn't nearly as scary out there as it was the last time we went out by you. No wild pigs rustling in the bushes:-)
