There is nothing special about this shot - except the people in it. Baby Bear helped 28 families this morning. It is getting pretty chilly at night in Cincinnati and little ones need warm outfits, diapers, coats.......and the list goes on. I made sure that folks aren't too recognizable here. But the tall guy in the back is my son, Andrew. He will be 36 tomorrow and I am blessed that he now works beside me. He is the one that is working on his Master's Degree and is teaching an English 101 and as Intro to Writing 101 this semester at Northern Kentucky University (and he is writing the great American novel about the Creek Indians). Took him a while to decide that he really wanted to pursue his education, but now he has found the perfect fit for himself. Did I say how proud I am of him??
Over at the toy table, in the red coat, is a little fellow that I love dearly. I have been putting shirts on him since before he was born. He turns five this month. I can always count on Trayvon for a big hug and kiss when he comes to see me. His mother sends us cards and makes things for our volunteers. She gives back!
Thanksgiving is approaching for those of us here in the States. I am so thankful for this part of my life. Anybody want to come straighten shelves?
@carolmw@henrir@tishpics@yonnie@grammyn@happypat@maggiemae@dauber@onie@fannyb@rwhite@anazad511@janets@worthitall@kamb@denisedaly Thank you all. I don't post about this for pats on the back. I do it to journal my day and to plant a seed. I was reading a book about what a congregation "could" do. We always got bogged down in the big picture. So I kept mulling over how we could make a small difference - that took me to the smallest folks - and then that has grown incredibly over the years to an entire room full of things that children really need. It wouldn't happen without the hands that fold, sort, buy and write checks. Lots of hands involved in this ministry - I get the title. Any one of you could start something like this. We started by holding Baby Showers for expectant mothers in our local high school. I was a young, single mom many years ago getting by with no child support from my son's dad. With the help of my folks and finding Tom - my Prince who fell for me and the boys - my life changed. So I want to be a small part of affecting change. And Maggie, it is all given away. If someone tells me they need it I trust that they do. If I'm wrong a child still benefits.
Looks like your church has the same mission as mine, "Reaching out with Christ to an ever-changing world." The issues of today may be different from our parents' generation, but people are still hurting and the need to bring comfort to them hasn't changed a bit.
Cathy if I lived in your area, I'd be there to straighten those shelves in a heartbeat (I actually enjoy things like that!). Our church participates in an area wide food pantry. There really are a lot of simple things a congregation can do. Hats off to you and your congregation for being the feet and hands (and heart) of Christ to a needy world.
@olivetreeann If you lived here I'd take you up on it!
It is amazing what people could do if they would only find a way to start. This mission started by holding baby showers for the pregnant girls at our local high school. And then it just grew - until no we are open for an hour twice a month and service 35+ families and growing.
