Maggie and I have been hanging out a lot together the last few days. She is really warm on my lap while I read. However, she is getting very tired of being the unpaid model. This shot cost me carrots - and I admit to faking her out and saying "squirrel" to get her attention. Bad doggie Mamma.
I love her. That is all there is to it. She is almost nine in just a few weeks. Her Addison's is under control and besides that she is very healthy. How many doggie parents go out to watch the elimination process? It is an indicator of her Addison's status, so one or the other of us is usually reporting in that "Maggie has her s*#t together." That is reassuring news. We've fought hard to get her healthy and keep her there. That has strengthened our bond.
Her therapy work, before the Addison's, was a true bond between us. She was amazing - and did she ever know her stuff. She would walk into a hospital room with her head high in her little red cape that signified she was on duty and allowed to wonder the hospital - and she had an ID badge just like mine that was attached to my chain. We worked with trauma victims - gun shots and stabbings. We worked the neurosurgical ICU with stroke victims. And we worked with folks whose loved ones were dying in the next room. And when we left the hospital and I would sit and cry - she worked for me.
She is retired now. She can't take the stress. One day I'll have another Therapy Dog. But right now I'm still totally in love with this little lady.
I faved this before I read the story. She is so beautiful and your story so wonderful - what a girl!
My friends' little Jack Russell had Addisons and it was such a difficult disease to treat and deal with. Without loving and devoted owners, those dogs would literally have no life.
She has one blue & one brown eye so an extra special dog for starters.. a well earned retirement but I bet she just loved her ''work''!!! She has a loving home & that's wonderful.
She is just gorgeous. I can just imagine with that loveable face she must have been very popular! I loved doing therapy work with some of my dogs many years back. Unfortunately I'm no longer in a position to do the work. I would have to drive a minimum of around 80km (50miles). Plus the current bunch are not really good candidates!
Like Jan, I FAV'd it before reading your account. Such a beautiful and expressive face; and the work you two did together is wonderful.
Happy Thanksgiving!
What a gorgeous looking pup! As long as she is responding to treatment for her condition she should do well. I think that you are a wonderful doggie Mamma!
Beautiful capture of such a wonderful companion. Your intro brought a smile to my face and a tear in my eye. I think you are very blessed to have Maggie in your life just as much as she is blessed to have you as such a wonderful owner. Beautiful portrait and massive FAV for me.
What a lovely dog and a beautiful story. We understand having to watch your pooch's elimination. We had a Border Collie mix for almost 15 years who, in his latter years, had bladder problems. We had to watch him every time he went out to be sure..... He took medication to help ease the problem. What a sweetie he was!!
