The canal boats are gorgeously decorated with flowers, Venetian masks and parasols. Apparently, the gondolas in Venice were decorated with jewels and all kinds of finery until the Doge made that illegal. So, the boats are painted black and decorated much more seemly today. They are one of the few means of travel in Venice.
