May 4

Forty years now since the Kent State shootings ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings). There was a good turn out for the memorial activities on campus today, and at the screening of a related movie, "Fire the the Heartland: Kent State, May 4th and Student Protest in America," ( http://fireintheheartland.org/FireintheHeartland/Home.html)
at the Kent Stage downtown. Many alumni in town for the occasion to join those who have never left. It was a life changing event for many. This memorial sits at the edge of the parking lot where the four students died.
All the May 4 Memorials on campus are worthy of honor...I believe this was one of the first...very nice photo, Cindy. It truly was a tragedy...

I heard an interview on NRP with one of the students that was shot and lived. It was very moving to hear about a time that I remember well. It was certainly a time of confusion and struggle for change. What a tragic time. Hard to believe that it was 40 years ago!

Oh, how well I remember this tragedy and the names of each of these four students. I was a student at Purdue that year and was participating in sit-in protests and moratoriums myself. Kent State shook up the nation and helped to change public opinion towards the Vietnam War. A seminal event in American history, to be sure.

One of the protests that incident sparked was at Marshall University in Huntington WV and I was right in the middle of it.

It looks like it's a really well looked after memorial. I had never heard of this event until I read it on here. 365 had proven to be very educational.

This is so moving. What is the DVD that is placed with the flowers?

it seems like it was yesterday... I was living in New Jersey then and I remembered how we were all so shocked... very sad indeed... and thank God... never repeated again.

I had not know of this event Cindy. What a tragedy. I was 20 then and remember anti war protests in Australia at the time.

I, too, remember the original event well. I had no idea there are still memorial servies being held! I guess this is how we remember and ensure that mistakes are not repeated.

I also remember the event well and even where I was when it happened. I had just been married May 1 and was on our honeymoon in San Francisco when the news broke. So shocking and sad. Great photo of the memorial - thanks.
