Never forget, always remember: Vukovar by cherrymartina

Never forget, always remember: Vukovar

Today we remember...
On this day 1991 Serbian army and paramilitary formations entered Vukovar after the city has been under siege for 3 months. For three months people lived in basements and shelters, under constant bombing. On this day they had to leave Vukovar...

Approximately 2,000 self-organised defenders (the army of Croatia was formed later) defended the city for 87 days against approximately 36,000 JNA (Yugoslav Army) )troops supplemented with 110 vehicles and tanks and dozens of planes.
The city suffered heavy damage during the siege and was eventually overrun. The damage to Vukovar during the siege has been called the worst in Europe since World War II

Around 22,000 civilians were forced into exile, 2,000 defenders of Vukovar and civilians were killed including 50 children under age of 10, and 800 went missing... They, we remember....

And the worse part that we will never forget...
More then 200 wounded Croatian defenders were taken from hospital and killed before UN came to Vukovar. Mass grave was found after the war with their bodies. There are stil a lot of people whose grave is not known,
And nobody was officially found responsible and sentenced for those crimes against humanity in this modern world, until today...
But we know, we remember and we will never forget.

This is how we remember.
Candles are lit in every Croatian city on the streets named after Vukovar.

a sad time for Europe and for Croatia

A sad memory, but necessary to tell the story. I hope that it will not be repeated, but I fear it is being repeated in other parts of the world.
