Medieval Manhattan by cherrymartina

Medieval Manhattan

This is San Gimignano a little medieval town on a Tuscan hill, very well preserved and known for it's towers among other things. There are still about dozen towers standing. Originally in 12,13th century there were 72 towers in total up to 70 m high... Imagine the pilgrims of middle ages coming close and seeing those towers on the hill in front of them...
There are some great images of this place on the internet taken from a distance.
It was important to build towers at that time in Italy, They had different purposes, but the most important thing was to build better and higher tower. They can be found in other cities as well, p.e., Bologna had great number of towers but just a few of them left.
Anyway, we had great time here. A small place with many small side streets, towers and walls to climb. Interesting souvenirs and food of course. We had enough time to really enjoy it, to feel the medieval whisper.
This was quite a day. We visited several interesting and lovely places in Tuscany, starting with Sienna. Drove through Tuscany all day long, among hills and vineyards. We went to one winery to taste some wine (5 sorts) and cheese, aceto balsamico and olive oil with truffles. Yum for the first few, but I am not really a fan of truffles. The day ended in this lovely city... MY photo in plus album will be about food...
What a beautiful place!
