The Luna moth is found in trees of the eastern part of the United States and into Canada. They only fly at night and that is how they got their name. The word "Luna" means moon. Luna Moths are members of the giant silkworm family.
The caterpillars eat hickory, sycamore and walnut leaves. As moths, they do not have a mouth and do not eat. They only live for a short time as a moth and their only purpose is to mate and then they die.
Their wingspan is about five inches long and four inches wide. They are one of the largest moths in North America.
