Pileated woodpecker (best I could do for now)

photo 61
This bird is one I've been trying to capture for over a year since I've been on 365. One day I encountered him close up, but didn't have my camera. While out driving, I saw the silhouette of him on one of the tallest palms in our neighborhood---looked like 200 ft up but I'm not very good at estimating distances. Anyway, I stopped my car on the button (it's a very quiet street) and focused on him through my windshield. He kept moving the whole time. Anyway this was the best I could do at the moment. Not very good, but kind of like the angle of the tree and little twigs to the left. I'll keep trying to get a closer shot. In the meantime here is some information about this beautiful bird:

Great capture, Carole! I keep seeing them at my parents place, but they like to hide on the opposite side of the tree!

They really are an awesome woodpecker. The ones around here are very shy and don't come close to the house at all. So for me, this would be an amazing capture! Keep at it, you'll get a close one soon.

I'm so glad you got your photo of him. I often hear them in the woods behind my grandmother's house, but only see them quick before they're off again. I think they're shy.

@herussell Hope, they're either shy or like to stay out of the limelight. I hear them a lot and from time to time they've come to visit our palm trees in back. I think I need to get outside more & watch ;-)
