2021-04-12 The Underwater Palace

There are 3 stations serving the popular tourist attraction Enoshima - the furthest away is the Shonan Monorail; across the road from that there's the Enoshima Railway, popularly known as Enoden, which is one of the oldest railways in Japan & is a bit more like a tram. Funnily enough, Enoden's owners are the Odakyu company who also have this railway station, Katase-Enoshima, on their own Odakyu line. It was recently remodeled although it's always looked a bit like this - the underwater palace of the Emperor of the Sea, as seen in the classic fairy tale, Urashima Taro.
Oh-so-Urashima-Taro! I had no idea that Enoshima had become so touristy in this kind of way. The things I've learned from you. But wait -- it's almost May! Are you leaving???

@jyokota This station's always been a bit over the top and themed like a palace... at least as long as I've known it! Which Enoshima are you thinking of that isn't touristy?! I've been putting off visiting it again before I leave (NEXT WEEK) because it was packed during spring break. I think I'll get an early start tomorrow morning...

@cityhillsandsea -- the Enoshima of my childhood in the 1960s, where tourists didn't mean build-a-sea-palace! haha, a time you are too young to know. NEXT WEEK !!! Sigh. I will miss your narratives and visuals that tell me stories of my homeland. It's the first time an entire year has gone by without a trip to Japan. 13 and a half months. And more to come. Will you return to Japan much in the future? You've done an amazing job seeing a LOT of the country in the time you have been there.

@jyokota I had a rummage around the interweb and look what I found for you! http://machi-net.jp/gallery11.htm Seems like there's been a themed station there for ages! Maybe your trip there didn't go past it - it's a little off from the road, you could easily walk down from the Enoden station and not see it.

As for me, yeah I'll be back. There's 8 stations with Sagami in the name that I haven't visited yet for one thing...
